Gender testing and Deputy President bashing

Caster Semenya‘s gold-medal victory in the 800m World Athletics Championships in Berlin has been overshadowed by a gender controversy. The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) ordered gender verification tests after her rapid improvement set off warning bells. Needless to say, comrade Julius Malema took this as a sign of yet another victimisation of a black person by the cruel, evil white people.

It is unfortunate that 18-year old Caster has to go through this at such a young age. She has certainly won many fans in South Africa and Wonkie hopes this media frenzy will not affect her future performance as one of South Africa’s most promising new athletes. While certainly due process needs to be followed when warning bells of any sort are raised – and nobody is exempt from these – well, with the exception of Princess Anne in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, greater care should be taken in protecting the privacy of such individuals until such time as the test results are available.

Gender testing is not uncommon and contrary to the numerous blog comments, they are not based on how masculine someone looks or sounds. Statistics also show that there is a fairly even spread of testing across the races in athletic events. The last disqualification on a gender testing basis was Indian Santhi Soundarajan who was stripped of the women’s 800 meters silver medal at the Asian Games after failing a gender test in Doha in 2006.

In other news, President Zuma is about to experience a President Mbeki moment. Former president Thabo Mbeki felt obliged to take action against then deputy-president Jacob Zuma when there were allegations of corruption against Mr Zuma. President Zuma now faces a gender test of a different type as the international community looks on at his decisions on issues surrounding now Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. In a nutshell, Mr Motlanthe has been implicated in a dodgy-looking oil deal brokered in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, one that is said to have contravened United Nations sanctions. Given Mr Zuma’s public insistence on a hardline against corruption, it will be interesting to see his next steps.

  1. I know zuma aint gonna do jack about mothlante! mbeki did the right thing and he was disgraced. zuma wont risk that.

  2. Very interesting issue, Mr. Zuma’s decision will show the world how capable he is but Im confident that he will make wise informed decision. Again Zuma is not a BOSS but a LEADER he can’t fire but the least he could do he can just suspend Mr. Motlanthe until justice took its course. Zuma is a Father after all. Thanks

  3. it did not suprise me when caster’s gender test hit the head line internationally because she is south african and at most a black person. people are stuck inthe old arrangement of equaling every black person to something less than a human, very dirty and unable to do anything that is good. if a black person does a good thing they would rather give praises to his mentor who at most happen to be of their race. perhaps ,jullius has a point when he says we lack black leadership in companies and as aresult this is how we pay. media is under them then what do you expect, they serve their masters!

  4. Mark Khoza says

i dont see president Zuma doing Motlante otherwise, there’s just nothing that much big in terms of his positioning with the ANC itself at stake or at least its too early in game to be strategic on this front,

  5. Mark Khoza says

let us not aggrevate the IAAF/ASA issue, its gone thos far already while it continues to violate one’s being, i dint care which side you are taking please!!!!

  6. for once in his life malema has a point this is plain exploitation, how many masculine white ladies have they taken for gender tests?

  7. if zuma wants to win everyone ‘s confidence he must practice what he preached, that he wont tolerate criminals most importantly corrupt officials. His seriousness in uprooting corruption must be seen in situation like this where his own comrade is allegedly involved, because you dont need to be heard saying such an such is wrong and then go against what you told the people initially, that is contradiction and people will not take kind of that. the wheel of justice must be left to roll undisturbed. if you can instill this in your own comrade then people will understand how tight is the tide against corruption is.

  8. Sadly, Zuma himself has set a poor precedent: if you CLAIM innocence, FORCE the rest of the nation to ASSUME your innocence and be VERY offended when they demand a fair trial (test) to VERIFY your innocence.

Tshediso’s and lux’s comments are typical indicators of blind loyalty. Any genuinely INNOCENT individual is actually HAPPY to have his innocence (or otherwise) tested. No big deal.

  9. hi tshediso, yes i am loyal to justice and my loyality is blind to justice and justice alone.
    my justice has no eyes,
    my justice curry no favors,
    my justice is just;
    my justice praises and appreciate equality;
and yes my justice does not wants adjustment.
it is in practice and effect fair and just.

  10. Zuma has an easy out, ‘innocent until proven guilty’, that is the principle he said Mbeki should have adopted, that is the one he is going to use.
Gender testing may be routine according to the writer, but it is not uncontroversial. The science behind it is not routine, it has not yet standardised.
The real push behind gender testing, is the old narrative that women are the ‘weaker sex’, that is how people are identified for gender testing. Do they fit the narrative, hardly scientific.

  11. malasarose says

we have so many musculine talented sisters around the world. the williams sisters (tennis), maria (athlete), all those musculine sisters in sport . do they (whites) still think losers when they think black. let them satisfy themselves by testing her. lets just keep on doing our great leaders (Martin Luther & Nelson Mandela) proud. a black US President what other proof do they need Caster to take off her clothes to show them that we Blacks are Damn good. viva SOUTH AFRICA. VIVA BLACK NATION.

  12. The whole Caster issue was very badly handled by the IAAF, but gender testing has nothing to do with race, so will those pathetic individuals who are trying to turn this into a black/white issue please get a life and stop being so racist themselves. Caster did the country proud and so what if she has a bit more testoterone than ‘average’? Usain Bolt has longer legs than average so he also has an unfair advantage, but who is complaining? Anyway, Caster did not even break the existing 800m record. Shows you how ‘vrot’ the rest of the field was. You go, girl!
As for Motlanthe, Zuma cannot do anything about him or any other corrupt members of government, until he himself has been proven innocent of all charges in a court of law. All this anti-corruption talk is just a lot of posturing. It would be interesting to hear the ANC’s definition of corruption. Very few of them know what the word integrity means.

  13. when a child is born we look were look to see gender, unfair treatment for caster semenya. if that’s the case every child must get tested when their born

  14. The person who was holding the record, Jamirla, doesn’t look like a woman either but I don’t recall her undergoing a gender test. But again, she’s not African, she didn’t have to. I hate to say this, i think I agree with Mr Malema this time.

  15. Oh please! do we really have to guess what the outcome will be. its a foregone conclusion. Come-on

  16. remember mpangane says

Here in south africa apartheid and around the world apartheid is still existing to some of the white people. How can you allow someone to participate in a competition without checking her first,if she didnt won the gold medal they wouldnt want to know her gender or if it was a white person who is like semenya who won they wouldnt bother to check her, just because is a black person. So these people must tell us straight that there”s still racism in our democracy,we will live like that, we dont care about them and we can live without them.the case of mothlante is up to the hands of zuma to decide what to do.And i”m sure zuma will come with a solid decision and no one must interfere in the decision of zuma especially those opposition parties like zille.

  17. @remember … you paranoid dick … the whites are too busy with their own lives to worry about what you are doing. Grow a pair and take responsability for your own life and stop blaming everything on apartheid(it ended 20 years ago and has been reversed for the past 14 with AA and BEE).If you cant compete head on with a serious minority group (10:1)fairly then maybe you just don’t have it in the first place and need to send men to compete with white women. And for your info more white women have been gender tested than black women.Life’s hardships are universal and affect everyone….It’s not just because you are black.Stop whining and try to start winning!(without cheating)(AA,BEE,sending men to compete in womens races etc)

  18. Remember mpangane says

@fred….i’m not afraid of competing in this world,i have a successfull future ahead of me as we talk now i’m in university, but what i can tell you is that i’m a black person and i can’t tolerate anyone to destroy the future of the black person, especially when it comes to race.Caster is not a male just because is a black person and she won the gold medal so the whites want to make sure that she does not go away with it ,so they are making plans to destroy her and her career. What ever you say fred but i can’t tolerate a black person like me to be destroyed.

  19. i think the issue of testing gender should be a choice.

  20. Oh yes, before I forget. Why is Stofile our honourable minister of sport so quiet after he so quickly said,” We go to war for Gaster” Why does he not wait and acquaint himself with the facts first? He shot himself in the foot again that time.

  22. Its true, thers a high rate of apartheid in South Africa, some whites are stil calling Mandela a terrorist, nd still be forgiven. To me the war is not yet over bt begging, White people are degrading instead of upgrading. RECONCILIATION my foot, its nothing cos based on the one side that is blacks, fuck I hate this.
Is this what is called new South Africa, no think again, this is what is called new compromising South Africa.

  23. Folks, Caster had a bad deal yes but lets put it behind us. The question now is who pulled her back this time. Watch the footage and you will see what went on. Our debts to the Kremlin? Poor girl taking it from both sides I see; -politico/racism. (before the dirty minded pseudo-moralists jump ahead again as usual). Can’t win can you?
