Jacob Zuma’s HIV Status

Many South Africans were no doubt relieved when president Jacob Zuma announced his HIV status earlier this week. Certainly those many that may have been directly affected by the result would have been most relieved. Mr Zuma’s HIV negative status has since been the subject of much discussion and debate. In fact, Wonkie is quite curious to know how the Zuma AIDS policy works.

Yes, as citizens that voted Mr Zuma into power it is likely that the majority of the voting public are glad Zuma does not get to try out the fantastic state anti-retroviral programme. But the points that are sparking the very valid debate are as follows:

1. The youth look up to Mr Zuma as a role model. Most would agree that this is a step up from looking up to Julius Malema as a role model. The question is what kind of message does Mr Zuma’s HIV negative status send out to them? Does it signal to them that the situation isn’t as dire as the media is making it out to be? That it is ok to have unprotected sex (plus a nice warm shower if in any doubt)? That promiscuous behaviour is fine because the consequences aren’t very probable?

2. A fair point as to why it was excellent that Mr Zuma did disclose his result is that it will help the cause of encouraging the South African public to go out and get themselves tested. At the very least it raises awareness that testing is important and that alone makes a significant leap forward to fighting the AIDS problem in the country.

3. Would President Zuma have disclosed the result if he were diagnosed as HIV-positive? For the point (2) above to be applicable Mr Zuma should get tested as regularly as the Health Department expects active citizens to get tested. He should also disclose his result each time. Every reminder he provides of what constitutes healthy behaviour is an additional seed planted in the fight against AIDS. If he now doesn’t disclose his future results there may be reason for a speculative panic of sorts – both socially and politically.

Regardless, Mr Zuma has taken far more positive measures on the HIV/AIDS issue than his predecessor Thabo Mbeki ever did. Mbeki’s policies and public statements on the subject were moronic in the extreme and certainly took the country leaps backward.

  1. How the hell can we believe him–he’s a liar through and through.!!

  2. Mthandazo bushula says

WONKIE I AM GETTING TO READ IT NOW, I AM NOT ANC OR MALIMA AND ZUMA’S FOLLOWER, BUT I HATE WHEN YOU ARE ALWAYS ON THEIR CASE ALWAYS CRITISIZING THEM. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING FROM YOU GUYZ I BET THE PERSON WHO ARE ENJOYING YOUR CARTOONS ARE DA AS IT LOOK LIKE YOU ARE CAMPAINING FOR THEM.

  3. I think it was great for Zuma to publically announce his results.. Hopefully it will encourage more people to get tested

  4. I do not believe for one second that JZ would disclose his HIV status if it was positive – so I don’t believe he was tested at all or had the results doctored – or is that sangomaed? The chances are excellent that he’s dripping with several other diseases in any case!

  5. Zaza Radebe says

WONKIE, AS YOUNG AS I AM AND AS SA CITEZEN I HATE THE WAY YOU WROTE NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT MR.ZUMA. AS YOUTH YES WE ARE LOOKING UP TO HIM AS OUR ROLE MODEL BUT AGAIN WE ARE ABLE TO RULE OUT WRONG/MISTAKES THAT OUR PRESIDENT DID AND FORESURE WE ARE NOT STUPID TO TO WRONG THINGS THAT HE DID. BY THE WAY HE IS A HUMAN BEING AND HANDS OFF HIM.HE DID WHAT HE DID AND HE PUBLICTLY APOLOGIZED ON ANATIONAL TV SO I SEE NO REASON FOR YOU TO TALK WRONLGY ABOUT HIM, HIS HIV STATUS IS HIS PROBLEM WHY SHOUL PEOPLE MAKE SUCH A NOISE, HAVE THEY TESTED BEFORE THEY CAN MAKE SUCH COMMENTS. MR ZUMA DOES NOT OWE ANY ONE EXPLANATION OF HIS LIFE HENS HIS OUR PRESIDENT. WE LOVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT.

  6. It is said to learn that our president is doing unprotected sex, what message is he sending to our children out there, i dont think Zuma took the test even if he did i dont care because he can give wrong results. what i am urging to south africans is that let us not be like our president please use condoms every time you have sex or abstain aids is real and people die because of this desease.

  7. This whole thing (HIV/AIDS) is blown out of proportion by the media and vested interests. Mbeki was probably correct.

  8. Zuma at least acknowledge HIV and AIDS. More than poor Mbeki did. He was sidelined by our dear (may she rest in peace) thief of a health minister. I did prefer Mbeki’s dignified quiet approach to things though rather than the dance master of Zuma. To each his own. We don’t have much (or many) to choose between.

  9. Mr Zuma’s public announcement on his HIV/AIDS status is great& encouraging. But I don’t think we need his regular testing update,I understand for being a public figure,I think he has lot more things to focus on.If it is encouragement, why can’t we be motivators, there is lots of Potifolio creatures who need do the same as the President has done why focusing on Zuma only as a role model?Being a human being has more weaknesses& strength as everybody else.If it is to be tested because Zuma has done so,I hope millions of Citizens woud do today.

  10. mziwethu Faku says

Good to see the President Jacob Zuma publicly disclose his HIV status, we did not know the other HIV status of other politicians or MP, we only know when they publicly go for testing NOT the results

Thanx to him again by changing HIV policies in our country and make sure its implemented

  11. Well done Pres Zuma but I wonder if you would have told the public if you were HIV Positive

  12. That was a positive step JZ took. It has motivated a lot of people like myself to go check my HIV status.

  13. SIMPLY RED says

Presdent JZ did the best by publicly declarinng his HIV status.Julius should follow suit, followed by Hellen then Shilowa next.

  14. Zuma is trying to be a good leader just don’t follow his lifestyle doesnt mean that youll also get lucky by sleeping with an HIV positive person and coming out negative

  15. Zaza Radebe – your last sentence, “WE LOVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT” is the precise reason why we will never have TRUE “LEADERS” in our country; who put the interests of the people first, who are accountable to the electorate, who are humble and morally upright, who believe that their role is to SERVE the people of the country and uphold justice. If you “BLINDLY” follow your leaders regardless of their evident short-comings (be they obvious incompetence, corruption, inability to keep his “member” in his trousers, cadre deployment, more interested in ensuring his party are in power than actually “GOVERNING” the country, etc.) then you will get what you deserve – something akin to diminishing returns (look up “law of diminishing returns”). Grow up and hold your leaders to account! We in Africa need to stop this cult of leader/party worship (respect and support your leaders yes) – but if they are not up to the job we MUST ship them out and find someone who is – regardless of what party they belong to/race/religion/etc. Time to change our electoral system to vote for a particular individual – i.e. The party has to put up electoral candidates for each ward, province, national etc. Then if you know that the candidate standing in your ward is a useless careerist politician who has no interest in your area but is trying to get to national parliament, then you don’t vote for him – period, even if he is from the party you support – if you do you will be shooting yourself in the foot.. Think about it – it works pretty well in most developed democracies.

  16. We voted for a president whose intelligence is below average and we can’t expect him to apply his mind fully to issues of high importance. Let’s live with him as he is but should not be afraid to criticise him. He does notice his weaknesses and he improves as time goes.

  18. Negative again! Whew, what a relief for the Prez.
How can I, as a citizen, respect a man who is supposed to be in the highest office of the land, has the morals of an ally cat?
It goes without saying that he is setting a very bad example for the youth, who are our future leaders.
ps. Has anyone noticed how nice and peaceful (relatively speaking) it is with Malema out of the country?

  19. Zaza Cont. When a political system forces political parties to “put their money where their mouth is” i.e. nominate a CANDIDATE for a position instead of just the party, what they are saying is they are confident that the candidate is the right person for the job and that they believe that the electorate will agree with them – a subtle but significant difference. This brings accountability and delivery to the fore in the decision making process of the electorate because they can put a face to the equation and not just a “party” which can hide behind a certain amount of anonymity. Think about it – our country deserves far more than careerist politicians out to feather their own nests while purporting to be a “champion of the poor” etc. We need leaders who are willing to roll up their sleeves, live with the people, be accountable and responsible and humble. Then we will see change in our country…

  20. People of SA let us look at life and leave others. Everybody are busy writing their own profile before the living earth. I am speaking from the Bible declaration, every deeds will be taken to judgement.

If I were to look after people’s life who would bother about mine? We dont know what might happen tomorrow. If you are fully informed of the wisdom, you wont spend time telling, judging and discriminating other people.Phillipians 1:21 For me to leave is Christ, to die its gain. What are we doing while alive?God bless you.

  22. i mach respect what the Resident Jacob Zuma did, i think it’s good for south african go get tested and know your status, and that was good for him to share his status with us.

  23. His message was clear: You can have unprotected sex, create babies out of wedlock, have many wives, and if you have a shower all ill be well

  24. It seems as if Mr. Zuma is gonna make sure he corrects evry mistake the media saw of Mbeki. His public announcement means nothing to me as he is a promiscous President ever. It only means if you have six wives, makhwapheni , sleeps and shower with an Hiv woman youi dont get HIV, YEAH RIGHT!
Never ever again compare Mbeki with Zuma Wonkie as you probably know HIV comes from an individual being promiscius not the President not being vocal about it so please leave Mbeki out of this.
Zuma must do his job and stop wasting time with lies!!

  25. i think mr Zuma is leading by example by disclosing his status to the public as a president, so the ball is now on the other,s courts to stand up and follow the same suits.

  26. Negative results, good for him bad influence to the youth. If its true the lady was positive, the results were tempered or shower magic works. I still don’t beleive them.

  27. I think JZ did the right thing but to suggest that he continually gets tested is both condescending and patronising him at worst. It also implies that the writer was not expecting to get such a result hence a guinea-pig scenario must be practised on him. This is re-enforced by the assertion in 3 of a possible positive result doubt on publicity. This is mainly done to him because he is black ( I can hear the gnashing of teeth now) but there clearly is seen a chasm between the writer and JZ, I opine.

  28. hi i think@some point we need to give MR Zuma same credit he did he,s test and let us not concetrate on this matter cause every body must take control of what they do i cant say ok the President has tested im going to let us go is for our own gud he did hes bid let us do ours and for Malema i think we need to stop intertaning him for a while cause he is not taking us anywerev but backwards i cant even say a thing about that guy

  29. i am not impressed because zuma’s first and second HIV test was kept a secret now he come with the third one and try to convince us to make our status public. in this case i will like to challenge all the MPs to do like wise including zuma’s wives, girlfriends and children.

  30. @Mirshin – the issue is not about testing Mr Zuma because he is black. It is one of precedent. Had he not disclosed his status Wonkie would have fully respected his right to do so. But now that he has, he has set a public expectation.

Clearly if Mr Zuma’s rationale was to provide leadership by example then he should continue to do so and not just do it when the results make it convenient to. So, no chasm between Wonkie and Mr Zuma at all – just a sincere hope of follow-through of what he’s started by his own choice. Not releasing further results will no doubt lead to speculation of the worst outcome – it’s inevitable is it not?

Incidentally, Wonkie would have hoped that many of the other cabinet members follow suit in a sign of solidarity with their leader – now wouldn’t that have made a strong statement about the importance of testing? Still, that is not for the citizens to decide – the choice clearly rests with the individuals. I think even disclosing that they went and got tested would be enough – there is no need to even disclose the results!

For those readers that feel that this post is written against Mr Zuma or his HIV status disclosure, you are very mistaken. If anything it is hopeful of more consistent leadership by example.

  31. Mkhonzeni Dlamini says

Someone must be interrogated, possible be imprisoned.Public safety and security on HIV prevention jeopardized. The country folk is out to expiriment the bath after the ordeal.Ahaha!! I am seriously not not joking.

  32. this is really sad because the media has succesfully managed to create a diversion from what was meant with this campaigne by the health minitry, which was to help mentalities get with the program of getting tested sothat we can know the magnitude of the problem facing us, no you people help bring it all down and reduce it to pathetic attacks on Zuma, there’s a bigger problem; people need to be conscietised of the importance of testing, we need that info like yesterday, the results are for the department to use, not for the media use irresponsibly in their own battles…

  33. why u people are so nagative about the president.he is trying to set example for the people to get tested,of which is not the bad thing.

  34. Hey Thomas -get with it.We are so negative about the president because there is sweet f all to be positive about. He has been proved a liar so why should we believe him.My medic will say i am a 74 year old virgin still got all my teeth have never been ill in all my life and love the acn [whatever],if i pay him enough.

  35. I think the announcement will encourage even those who have been reluctant to test because they have been having more than one sexual relationships. Even though the results may differ but they would have tested and known their status. If you love yourself…. go test while there’s still time for treatment. It’s not about the President but your own life. Love yourself!!!

  36. I think the announcement will encourage even those who have been reluctant to test because they have been having more than one sexual relationships. Even though the results may differ but they would have tested and known their status. If you love yourself…. go test while there’s still time for treatment. It’s not about the President but your own life. Love yourself!!!

  37. Indeed President Jacob Zuma has started it and I feel good leaders live by demonstrating good works. I think he has taken one step in educating the nation about his HIV/AIDS and they have to do likewise. I wish him the best and even to his government as well.

  38. Muhali Fhatuwani Louis says

I think it is good news to all South Africans and Zuma’s supporters, me excluded, if he is indeed negative.

  39. two keyz says

Zuma is a disgrace, how is he going to tell people that unprotected sex can lead to HIV/AIDS when he always practices unsafe sex and then come out to the public to disclose his status as being negative.people out there will go the same way as him and guess what many,if not all, will disappear like water poured in a hot pot, mark my word. This zuma is killing the whole nation with his hypocracy, teaching something else and doing the opposite on the other side.

  40. Zuma regime is doing well on the fight against HIV AIDS. His negative status might send wrong signals to the ignorant youth. I think the cubs Juju and his cronies must follow suit and get tested and go public about their status. Let it be a cool thing to get tested.

  41. guys…u cant hate Mr Zuma for life…pls accept change….this guy he never allowed corruption to be done or legalize rape as you thought he will….Mr Zuma he is a human being with brain same as you…so guys stop to be judgmental….cos u make me sick with ur stupid comment about Mr Zuma

  42. Getting tested is one thing and announcing the result is another. If these people were serious they would have conducted the testing live on TV and we also see the results live on TV. I know it is not mandatory but this would have cleared the mind of the doubting Thomases like me.

  43. deiza, agree re the droolers to get tested and announce their status – but what about it being “cool” as you mentioned to actually take responsibility for yourself and stop shagging about like rabbits and being responsible…? maybe our esteemed leaders should take the lead in this regard – it is not about being tested – it is about acceptable BEHAVIOR (ie modified if necessary) in the face of an (largely) African Pandemic. It has nothing to do with poverty or lack of knowledge (there has been more than enough information campaigning) it is all about attitude and behavior…

  44. HABO,
ZUMA DID NOT SLEEP WITH BUT RAPED THE HIV+ DAUGHTER OF A FRIEND.
IF HE SLEPT NEXT TO, AS IN, WITH HER, HE WOULD NOT HAVE GONE TO HAVE A SHOWER AND THEN HIS OWN BED TO SLEEP. IF ZUMA PERFORMED THE SEXUAL ACT WITH HER IN A TREE, WOULD YOU STILL SAY “HE SLEPT WITH HER”?
HOWEVER, IF ZUMA JUST SLEPT WITH HER HE WOULD BE A FAR BETTER MAN TODAY.
    HABO,
IF YOU STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT SLEEP AND SLEEPING AROUND MEAN, THEN IT IS ONLY FLOYD OF THE A-N-C-Y-L THAT CAN EXPLAIN IT ALL TO YOU. I WISH YOU LUCK BECAUSE HE IS ALSO MENTALLY CHALLENNGED.

  45. hi there Phred,

    – it is not about being tested – ?????? some news for you, this particular campaign was exactly about that, TESTING. You want to continue with your endless ridiculing and denigration of the government and and Zuma, we understand and we do get your point but do not do it at the expense of what is meant to be achieved by the health ministry, the campain is about getting people tested period….

  46. Mark Khoza – Point taken – getting tested is part of the overall campaign and a necessary part (start for many). My point (though possibly misplaced on this thread in this forum) would probably back the GOVERNMENT (you seem to think I deride so much) more than it would the ordinary citizen. i.e. is it not the responsibility of each and everyone of us to conduct our lives in such a manner that it does not impact negatively on our fellow citizens (akin to this “mythical” Ubuntu I keep hearing about). If HIV and AIDS are undeniable realities and of epidemic proportions in SA, is it not incumbent on me to change my lifestyle (if necessary) to ensure that I do not contract it or transmit it if I have it? We are so quick to shout about our “rights” but no one ever mentions their own RESPONSIBILITIES to society in general. why should it be the governments responsibility to ensure that I behave in a way that ensures the safety/freedom/betterment/etc of my fellow citizens? Why should those who do not lead lifestyles that expose them to this risk be prejudiced in terms of their tax utilization on medical spending – i.e. if they suffered kidney failure / got cancer or another life threatening disease through no fault of their own? Check where most of our medical expense goes in national hospitals… All this for perhaps the single most avoidable infection in the world (it has a single vector of transmission…). PS – I am apolitical – I will criticize any government who performs poorly at what they are elected to do (that is GOVERN the country by the way) – regardless of who, what, and wherever they are (it is my right after all). I will also support them in what they do well in and will obey the laws of the land and respect them for being our leaders (I just wish our “leaders” would respect the people they are meant to serve).

  47. Ayoba to the shower………

  48. good for the country it shows that the leader must lead by examples. We need to know our status, the sooner the better.

  49. Who is sure that Zuma is HIV negative? I really don’t trust this man. He might be lying, thinking that he is fooling us, whereas he is fooling himself.

  50. By the way did anyone actually get to see the test results, or we are just going by the word of JZ? Just a thought!

  51. Gorogoro says

Apostle Thomas had to see and feel Jesus’s wounds before he could believe. Wonkie, ‘bell the cat’, get a copy of the script for everyone…..

  52. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. Makwakwa says

Only Fools & stupid are very much interested in someone’s status. specially HIV.After all its not the President but Zuma as an individual who has right to his privancy.

  54. we all make mistakes and taking responsibilities for them means that you have actually learnt somethng and i believe that that also applies to jacob…..n just so you know, everyone has the right to privacy!!!

  55. Thank you Mankwankwa,

The Zuma vilification as an obsession is consuming this though consortium we are seeing here, at the expense of what is attempted to be achieved by the department, the obsession itself has gone so far as to cripple the ability of the thinking to move on progressively in that the same thinking instinctively find solutions to that which it identifies as calamity, this thinking is stuck, cannot move on, Prof Janson said in a Times column once that thrue leadership as it exists in each of us but mostly to us that are in the institutional lead such as students at school, kids at home, employees at work are most likely to do what we do as immediate leaders instead of what we say/ or tell them to do, fix your home, your thinking, priories in what you talk about etc. your kids would most likely follow on your steps more that those of the evil Zuma.

  56. @Makwakwa, @Khoza, the fool is the one who thinks when a person makes his status public, he still has any privacy to talk about.Once the results were published in the papers and on TV, they became subject to public scrutiny. When our leaders publicly say that people must engage in responsible sexual behaviour, that is a public statement and if they do things that are contrary to their words, they must expect public scrutiny. So wake up and see the real world buddies!

  57. Mthoko – but we have do that once and move on forward haven’t we? then let’s see the real world and move on forward, that is what i’m about, we cant waist out minds for a month or two on vilifying someone, a n institution or a system, before we know it we would need fixing ourselves buddy!
