Bafana Bafana ready

South African soccer team Bafana Bafana is ready for action for the Fifa 2010 World Cup which kicks off on home soil late next week. Their convincing 5-0 victory over Guatemala and particularly impressive record for tallying up penalties has most of South Africa very optimistic about local prospects in the tournament. Still, Guatemala is ranked 114th compared to the real competition in Group A which are all members of the Fifa top 20 – Wonkie hopes the home side will continue to deliver the goods in style.

Brazilian coach Carlos Parreira announced the final squad of 23 for Bafana Bafana. Surprisingly for many South Africans, it did not include experienced international Benni McCarthy. Even more surprisingly and quite welcome was Benni’s unusual humility about being omitted from the final 2010 World Cup team. The coach did not give specific reasons about any of the players omitted from the squad but did indicate that current form and physical fitness played an important role in making the tough decision.

The Bafana Bafana World Cup 2010 team:

Aaron Mokoena (Captain)
Moeneeb Josephs
Itumeleng Khune
Shu-Aib Walters
Matthew Booth
Siboniso Gaxa
Bongani Khumalo
Tsepo Masilela
Anele Ngcongca
Lucas Thwala
Siyabonga Sangweni
Lance Davids
Kagisho Dikgacoi
Thanduyise Khuboni
Reneilwe Letsholonyane
Teko Modise
Surprise Moriri
Steven Pienaar
Siphiwe Tshabalala
Macbeth Sibaya
Katlego Mphela
Siyabonga Nomvete
Bernard Parker

Coach: Carlos Parreira

For those that care, the ANCYL showed their approval and support of the 23-man squad. Floyd Shivambu of the ANC Youth League was quoted as having said:

“All South Africans should stand firm, with no doubt that this time Bafana Bafana will in the true South African way illustrate to the world that we are winning nation.”

He went on to say the ANCYL would mobilise youth to support the team if Bafana progressed to the later rounds of the tournament. BBC journalists and security officials are reportedly getting prepared for mass action and chants to kill for Bafana Bafana.

In other news, Terror Lekota is struggling for survival following a vote of no confidence taken against him within the Cope ranks.

  1. Phelane Phelane says

I believe we have a chance of progressing to the next round.
What is needed in the field of play is,determination and luck, which we have had in the past games. Those penalties will come, not because of favour, but because we put presure on the opposition.

  2. an all black team?

  3. Defeating Mexico will be a miracle. All those friendlies with lower FIFA ranked makes Bafana administrators bury their heads in sand. It is impossible. The line up of Bafana squad leaves a lot to be desired. By the no. of strikers – are we to play defensive soccer? Why for friendlies, Bafana didnt consider countries like Morocco and Egypt, even Mali – who have proved to be good teams. Playing less experienced teams and beating them is to live in denial.

  4. Manthata says

I am very confident that bafana bafana will give their best perfomance ever, they owe it to the nation and to themselves to make our country proud. Good luck BAFANA BAFANA .

  5. We are ready to host and win the game with the squad we have we are very ready. We must stand firm and support Bafana.

  6. Not a snowball’s chance in hell!

  7. Dukie743 says

Big Big mistake not including Benie McCarthy in the team. He has had world cup experience and will be the ultimate goal getter when badly required. Forget about his alleged arrogance. He also appears to have lost that excess weight and is match fit. People will start bleating and blaming his exclusion if Bafana Bafana fails to get into the second round.
I did not like coach Parreria’s sniggering comments about the vuvuzella’s being the 12th player for Bafana Bafana. He stated that the fans must blower them even louder and in increasing numbers in order to ‘spoil’ the opposing team’s chances. Thats not sportsmanship. The coach was giggling like a little girl when pointing out Thailand coach Bryan Robson’s dismay concerning the vuvuzella’s after his team was thrashed by Bafana Bafana recently. South Africa will lose needed friends with that kind of sportsmanship.

  8. there won`t be any world cup in this country since blatter has been given an ultimatum by his board to prove that the presidential order granted to him by zuma was not a bribe for him not to enforce plan-b and if he deny it that it was a bribe he will then be requested to enforce plan-b to prove thast it was not a bribe.

when this country was given the bid it did not qualify since all our infrastructure had by then collapsed.this is my opportune time to fight my luthuli house and union buildings enemies by keeping this cup out of this country because by all probabilities it has become obvious that these are my enemy as a black south african.

i welcome safa`s dispatching of these coloureds since they are definitely not africans sibnce they don`t identify with africa and everything african.they have spewed bile countless times that they werre coloureds nd not black enough and so in the squad we want people who identify with the continent and who are loyal to the continent.they must maar disappear in amsterdam because that`s where they will likely feel comfortable in.

  9. Blatter will go down in the annals of history as a man who accepts bribes
from countries that will likely not qualify to host the world cup as he did
by accepting a Presidential Order from the South African Presidency.

Blatter must strip naked and jump on top of Mount Everest and shout at the
top of his voice convincing us this isn`t a bribe but that South Africa is
fit to host these games. He must convince us that even if he would have
given the bid to another country South Africa was gonna honour him and that
if he enforce plan-b the order will not be taken away or be seen as a
    corrupted fifa president.

  10. seeing that the ANCYL gave their approval of the final 23 they’ll properly pay a way for Bafana in the second round or didn’t Malema get that tender.

  11. thomas mmmoledi says

i cant pretend otherwise the final 23 man squad is very impressive. we can only look forward in givivg the boys our utmost support, and ensure that our maximum support will take them to the second round, and further in the competition. as for bennie, and the other dropped guys hold your heads high, cause there is always another chance and they must not be despondent. to quoute the choach “it is unfortunate that fifa expects only 23 from the associations.”

  12. More concerning is the presidency that gave the bribe. Underlining how corrupt our country is. Steal, steal is all they can do learning so from childhood.

  13. Margaret Taylor says

Fat chance!!!! Why so few whiteys in the team? I thought we were a rainbow nation.

  14. LIPALESA THEKO says

SOUTH AFRICA HAS DONE WONDERS TO BRING THE” WORLD” THE WORLD CUP AT OUR DOOR STEP. WHY NOT THE BAFANA BAFANA WIN FOR US THE WORLD CUP . FOR SURE BAFANA STAND A GOOD POSITION TO WIN AND PROOF TO THE WORLD THAT ,THE RAINBOW NATION IS GREAT, CAPABLE, TALENTED ,INNOVATIVE AND POWERFUL. GOOD LUCK BAFABAFANA.

  15. I THINK WE MUST NOT DOUGHT OUR SQUAD WE NEED NOT TO HAVE MANY QUETIONS ABOUT WHETHER THEY WILL WIN OR NOT WE MUST JUST SUPORT THEM AND STAND WITH THEM AND SAY THIS CUP IS NOT GOING ANYWERE IT STAYS LETS JUST BE PORSETIVE ABOUT OUR BROTHERS,HUSBANDS,AND FRIENDS

  16. Phelane Phelane says

There is something wrong with our people;when we play a lowly ranked team and beat them 5-0, everybody is quick to point out that. But yesterday Brazil beat a lowly ranked Zimbabwe 3-0, and people were singing Brazil praises and telling how good they are by beating Zimbabwe. Where is the difference? The name or the attitude towards Bafana?

  17. Ol' Pliny says

Hmmm… June: “an all black team?”
Well, Booth is white, but then white is not a colour.
Anyhow, patriotic ‘of te not’ like the boere say, I will not specifically be watching
or rooting for Bafana, Bafana, the yellow banana, Cos Ghana gonna play better
    than yellow Bafana.

If Balfour, when minister of sport, said that he does not watch cricket to see Kallis
play, then my comment is fairly tame by comparison.
It’s based on performance rather than racism.

  18. Manthata says

    Tim.

With only a few days to 11th June, you still think like that, You must be wetting your pants when you think it’s happening, come on Tim, FEEL IT, IT’S HERE.

  19. South Africa is more than ready to kick off the world cup games that for sure
but i’m not happy that Bennie will not play this time anyway go bafana bafana go we are with them all the way.

  20. GatvolinSA says

I refuse to watch sport as most of it strikes me as silly and predominantly about politics.

I used to watch rugby when we had the Springboks who won games fairly regularly against top seeded international teams. Then some political nuts complained that they were too white and demanded that we cut good players in favor of black guys who from the looks of their playing style needed help finding the ball. Now the country says I’m not patriotic enough if I don’t support incompetent black sportsmen? Fine. Then I’m not patriotic enough I guess. Never mind that I would die for this country or kill for her if need be, that’s apparently not enough any more.

I support COMPETENT sportsmen and women regardless of their skin color.
I support sportsmen and women who comport themselves with dignity, honor, integrity and honesty.

I will begin watching sport again when our various sports teams start playing against top seeded international teams so that we can get better at the game and actually win. Playing the lowest seeded teams out there and beating them is ultimately self defeating because we are teaching them to get better while we ourselves stagnate and get worse.

Our sportsmen and women also need to learn how to comport themselves in the international arena. Behaving like a lawless hooligan is not giving a good impression of our country. When they learn better I will return to watching sport along with all my family and friends, who haven’t watched sport since it became about politics instead of about the sport.

  21. YES BAFANA BAFANA ARE READY FOR ACTION AND I HOPE. BAFN’S ARE DOING WELL. WE ARE GOING TO WIN. I ALSO LOVE THE COACH ( CARLOS PEIRREIRA ).

  22. David Owen says

Please don’t be disappointed when we get totally destroyed by every team we get to play in the Competition. Our boys may look good to us against the conveniently friendly ‘rigged’ teams they have played to impress and build up morale, but when the real ‘thang’ happens the truth will come out. . .we simply are’nt in the league yet, despite all Carlos Parreira’s enthusiasm. [I still do not understand why Professor Tim Noakes and his Institute could not provide a better Coach, and he would have been a whole lot cheaper.]

Anyway, enjoy the spectacle and lets hope not too many Touristo’s get mugged, [or worse] because when this little Soccer Match is over, the few whites still left here are going to see organizational collapse and a rapid return to the dark ages, totally overwhelmed by the American Dream of controlling by bribery and corruption [if the threats don’t work] selling George Bush’s family goodies and ‘Electrical Requirement’ garbage right under our noses, ably supported by Alec Irwin who is smoothly collecting for his own benefit. Nice move Alec. Must have been a tough decision selling the white brotherhood down the river so you could pocket big time. Obviously Apartheid is still to blame, or are we too weary from the Struggle ?

At least we must be very pleased ‘they’ are going to let us watch all the games on ‘ordinary’ TV. Halleluja.

  23. Bafan Bafana will make it.

  24. Zero for an ALL BLACK TEAM

  25. Viva Bafana Bafana Viva, try best guys please put africans on the global

  26. I would say a bit ambitious to think we will win the world cup though we need the support spirit. Politics are in any way not good for any sport in any country; too black or too white or too Indian…Golf and Tennis remains an Irish coffee, with few Tiger woods, Makhayantinis and the williams with just as good talents, marathons, rugby and Cricket were too white and good, for some time until recent blend . I believe we need to be color blind and and let talent determine players. Many contries as we speak have a one or two race(s) team as per country’s population dominant race…maybe equitable measures instead of politics, then we will have sport.

  27. dont tel me that there is one white man in te bafana team because that man is a WANABE a back man so bafana is an all black.

  28. Leonecole says

Put a man on the moon. Make us a new nuclear world power. Win an international award for human rights, compose an opera or a short operetta, or write a book to rival J.M. Coetzee’s work, or tell the world how human races developed, or just do something, anything, intellectually important or daring, something new… THEN we will stand behind behind our heroes. But for playing soccer? Or running?

  29. Ol' Pliny says

The word sport usually conjures up a picture of camaraderie that unites people. In
other words. Sportsmanship. Older ones among us when playing any type of game
at school, used to be on the look out for any lack of sportsmanship. When seen, all
others would say, “That’s not cricket’ and the player usually ceded to the reproof.
I have something in common with G.V in SA, that I do not deliberately sit down to watch sport except
for ‘one on one’ types such as tennis, surfing, ice skating, etc. Bad sportsmanship probably got a kick
start during the Olympics of the German Reich when it was Hitler’s ambition to show the world how
the ‘master race’ excels in all. He was severely upset when his Aryan champion lost to a Black man.

Claiming to play for one’s country is among the greatest of hoaxes. People either play for their own
glory or that of their ideals. In the USA many years ago, after collecting their medals, black Americans
raised their fists in the ‘Black Power’ salute.

Why should I support the sport god of the country that considers me a second grade citizen, introduced
a system similar to apartheid, and that of Hitler’s Germany, but under a different name – BBE.
Yet, it cannot, or will not even fulfil it’s promises to the poorer among their own Black people.
I’m really sorry that I cannot share your world cup fever. The word ‘sport’ is a misnomer.

Some prominent person said many years ago. “Future wars will be fought on the sport’s fields – not on
battlefields.’ Though I did try, I could not find the reference on the net.

  30. I love Bafana Bafana. This time they will make it. Lets get together and support our team.

  31. Ol’ Pliny – Are you not referring to Wellington who said that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton? The reason I like sport is because I would rather see sportsmen contesting a game than soldiers shooting at each other.

  32. My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!

  33. Ol' Pliny says

Moxie, I saw that reference on the net while searching. The topic was sports, and
emphasis was on how some nations use the prowess of their super sportsmem to
try and prove how well their country’s population are educated, trained and
nourished. It’s just empty air. “Oomph, ego, bluster and significance.”

Moxie >> “I would rather see sportsmen contesting a game than soldiers shooting at each other.”
Perhaps you haven’t been looking too closely at some ‘sports’ Have you ever heard of Zinedine
Yazid Zidane? Have you seen eye gouging in rugby? Watch a little boxing and wrestling to
see how people behave when there is no war on the go.

  34. south africans should stand together as a nation and support bafana bafana and just for once stop politicising issues. siyanqoba majita, u are blessed

  35. Booth is not a white sportsman but an African one as he did when he married an African womanas a sign of his commitment to Africa.

The coloureds have rejected Africa and all that it stands for and directed their loyalty to westernism. They registered their anti-African stance by cohorting the apartheid rulers to substitute black languages with foreign languages and frnch and german were part of those languages they learned at school and show their rightwing colours.

They are in it for themselves to take the trophy to coloureds because they don`t like to support black sport heroes like Radebe and want their own people.I challenge those blacks who are defending the indefensible to take a walk in colkoured areas and see if you`ll come back alive or unscathed unless you`re a gangster.

  36. NO WINNING FOR BAFANA. I’LL BET ON MY LAST TEN CENT.

  37. what are you talking about?if sport was apolitical then our squads{cricket, rugby and soccer}would have been called springboks ,bafana etc but the fact that they are registered as South Africa means that they fall in the National Security ambit hence you have Presidents getting involved.

Squads play for the country, government and citizens!

  38. CRAYZEE TEE says

COME ON SOUTH AFRICANS lets be united and give BAFANA support. There might have had problems but u through our support nd encouragement a change can be seen!

  39. CRAYZEE TEE says

COME ON SOUTH AFRICANS lets be united and give BAFANA support.Theymight have had problems but u should bare in mind that through our support nd encouragement a change can be seen!

  40. Ol’ Pliny The sportsmen choose to play contact sports such as wrestling and rugby. They are not forced. Politicians coerce the young men to go to war whilst they are safe back at home. The two situations are not comparable. Some men, and increasingly women as well, have always been competitive and are willing to risk injury when playing sport. I enjoy the spectacle, so sue me! The Romans knew a thing or two when they said that all the people needed were bread and circuses

  41. FOOTBALL FROM MY BELIEVE IS NO MATHEMATICS, I THINK WHAT WE (AFRICANS) SHOULD DO PRESENTLY IS TO SUPPORT THE NATIONS REPRESENTING AFRICA. THIS IS A GAME OF 11-11 SO, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.
    LONG LIVE AFRICA.

  42. GatvolinSA says

@ Moxie: The Romans also believed in killing the eventual victor if the crowd didn’t like him 😛

You make a good point about war though Moxie. I wonder how drastic a drop there would be in membership in the political arena if we forced the politicians to go to war instead of our youngsters? Might be a good way of separating the true politicians from the greedy, lazy, corrupt chaff….

  43. Tim, get alive. South Africa have got the capabilities of hosting the World Cup. Only seven days to go.

  44. NAME THEM TUMI!

  45. Ol' Pliny says

Moxie, this is not a post to carry on a man to man, er, perhaps woman debate. I merely
wanted to enlighten you, and will again now. (for the last time) Fighting is fighting
whether in sports or war, One day, should you ever approach the age of 80, you, like
myself and many others, will cringe when you realise how stupid or ignorant we were
when younger. We all thought the old folks had stupid ideas. Just one more thing:

Moxie >> “Politicians coerce the young men to go to war whilst they are safe back at home.”
Sorry dear, during the last war, it was the ministers of religion who coaxed the cream of the young
flock to go and fight for their country. Religion is a powerful force. It controls the majority of people
in this world. There would have been no wars had they preached that which the Bible teaches, IE:
Love thy neighbour and turn the other cheek.

What a pity it is not possible to upload pictures.
Many years ago, someone gave me a few revolting pictures. For instance, a priest bedecked in his
surplice, with rosary and a massive cross dangling to his knees, was sprinking holy water over a
long bench full of rifles, while military officers stand by at the back of him.

Look dear, the greatest majority of young people complied when called up for service.
They were not forced to go – They were more afraid of their government than God.

You may, perhaps catch me listening to sport, but never to any churchman – Pope or pastor.
These are the main ones who stayed at home whereas their flocks got killed for God.
Now, look what happened to the proud country, brave young Afrikaners once gave their lives for.
Now go tell that to your minister, padre, priest, pastor or presentor. Let ’em sue me.
(Dammit, there I have gone and used that horrible hackneyed phrase that everyone copies)

  46. i wil forever support bafana without conditions even if the coach do not call up the team i would have wanted him to. i will in this instances retain my remedy to critisize. pareira in due respect is a good coach and like any one has his highs and lows … that is for every human. i am devastated with the xclusion of benny, really it does not make sense @ al. nobody can deny that benny is the best above anyone striker for south africa now and his body size cannot take that away. pareira has his personal issues with benny and he is using his mentorship power to settle the score. i understand that benny in the past snubbed us but he is our boy,he is skillful and it is times like this that we need him. you cannot kill your precious son for kissing your rival instead advice him . people should understand that we did not only wanted to host world cup but we also wanted to compete. two wrongs cannot sum up to a right… pareira and his technical team made a mistake and a great one. i want believe that nomvete, killer, parker & suprise together cannot make up one benny. say some thing about weight i will ask you whether you ever saw shakes kungoane during his game times, roger feutumba, doc khumalo and more… it is just not right.

  47. Ol' Pliny says

I did state that the ‘one on one’ debate is over, but it is not good manners to utter
unsubstantiated statements such as the one I made on the role of the churches in
the furthering of violence. After scouring the net for references to the role of the
churches in warfare, I came across the following:

In an excerpt from General Frank Crozier’s book, “A brass hat in No man’s land…” The Pittsburg
press May 7 1930 wrote, “The Christian churches are the finest blood-lust creators we have.
Of them we have made good use.”

One would imagine that goverments and the military would be eternally grateful to them for their
assistance in winning the war. Not so. They were despised.

Then agan, did not the churches notice that, repent and withdraw their support to all violence.
Not on your life. (excuse the pun) Come World War II and they were back in full steam.

  48. Ol’ Pliny – I, too, was not going to comment to your pretentious assumptions. I am a grandmother, a retired accountant and entitled to my opinions. I have always resented being “spoken down to” by self-opinionated men. 🙂
Give us an example where the Church has declared war in modern times. With your vast knowledge this should not be difficult.

  49. iN THE PAST CHURCHES IN sOUTH aFRICA WERE ADVOCATING VIOLENCE FOR THE VIRTUE OF THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH EITHER THE nats or freedom fighters.

Charismatic Churches in the Continent{missionaries} have been siding with capitalists to colonise the continent.

  50. name them tumi-the capabilities you refer to.

  51. The question is “When did the Church declare war?” The newspapers also associated with different political persuasions, so does that mean that they, too, are warmongers? Stick to the facts.

  52. Ol' Pliny says

    Moxie dear,
Although I declared the ‘one on one’ debate to be over and out,
unfortunately I have to once again correct you.

My post about the church’s contribution to violence was not personally
directed to you, but to anyone here who may be interested.

In harmony with the ‘sports’ theme of this latest Wonkie, I was trying to prove
that violence plays a part in almost every aspect of human involvement.
Whether taxi wars, strikes, road rage, the world cup or the wine bottle.
This is why I don’t want to get involved with the ‘World cup fever’.
That type of spirit in those lacking self-control often ends in the breaking
down or burining of sport stadii. (stadiums)
You have seen in the news here in SA and elsewhere.

I have said the following, and will say it again:
I have never yet in these posts objected to the opinions of others.
Nor have I ever asked Wonkie to reprimand or exclude anyone, or close
down a post. Keep the peace dear, and leave war to the clergy.
When the war does come, they’ll be back in full force.
Being tax-free is not an easy thing to give up..

  53. yes.in apartheid south africa the newspapers were killing critics and detractors of the apartheid governmenty by exposing activists hiding places and forwarding critical letters from readers to the special branch.in Zimbabwe newspapers were shut down after it was found that they were taking sides with mugabe`s critics.

  54. Ol' Pliny says

Forget about Black against White or vice versa.
The whole of society is to blame in this respect.
Only Ghandi and a couple of stoned hippies advocated peaceful resistance,
and Donovan Leitch sang about it.

Here’s more proof on the how churches support governments rather than God:
Tutu: “Violence in the battle against apartheid is justifiable.”
Reference: INTERNATIONAL NEWS – The Afro American Jan 24 1987.
Go ahead and read the whole story.

Those who refuse to accept these facts are entitled to their opinion,
and we wish them well during their blissful ignorance,
er,,, and also while they are sitting in a stadium somewhere.

  55. Does anybody understand the question “When did a Church declare war in modern times?”

  56. Ol' Pliny says

    Moxie askes:
    Does anybody understand the question
“When did a Church declare war in modern times?”
I’m sure most intelligent people in this post know the answer to that.
It’s just that the question was too stupid to answer.

No church declared war in modern times.
In fact, as far as any of know, neither did any church in the past
declare war, nor are any likely to declare war in the near or far future.
Declaring war is a mental act of governing authorities, dear.
The churches simple provide the stage, the props and the actors

  57. Thank you! I rest my case!

  58. Well it is here, But we don’t have to lie to ourselves we just have to configure how are going to do it. Ayobanese…

  59. crayzeetee says

i dont understand ur statement wena HUNK.wat do u mean

  60. Manthata says

Can all of you start thinking clearly, this is about our readiness for the world cup, not about churches, wars etc.

  61. Ol' Pliny says

Manthata, you missed the boat. The debate is overs gedovers.
Moreover, people are already flocking in for the world cup so,
you missed the boat there as well.

In any case, why tramp on toes? Leave intervention to the Post moderator.
Every type of forum experiences digression. It livens up things somewhat.
How utterly boring it will be if everyone just sticks to topic.
Man alive, you even do that at home – don’t you..

In passing, don’t downgrade God below the World Cup.
You may yet need him. Your patriotism is gonna cost you and me plenty.
The W.C. has already put Cape Town in the red to the tune of 4,4 billion,
and they plan to recoup that from the ratepayer. Ditto, elsewhere.

The whole country has lost out – Read and digest the Sunday Times.
Presumably, you are a taxpayer. When the intoxicating ‘spirit’ of the
W.C. wears off, you can expect a nice tax high jump.
Some previous W.C. cities are still nursing the pains.
Like the booze, people only feel it after the revelry.

But wait, that”s not all. Post W.C. brings the headaches that follow the
celebration spirit. Municipalities in all the host cities need to pay additional
expenses to forever maintain and guard those huge stadii.

  62. South Africa as the host country is very ready.
As for bafana…all the best and good luck. I give my conditional support. I still say we have a captain who plays against us in every match he is in…an under-achiever who was appointed to be captain for no reason attached to his soccer performance. If he is a good leader like they say, he must just lead from the bench (join the technical team) and let real soccer performers do the captaining of the team on the field.

Once I hear politics and politicians attaching themselves and throwing their spanners into our bafana soccer performance and support, I fear for mediocrity that we will be forced to accept after Bafana is out. Most of these YL boys are starting to look like Fat Benni, flab and fat out of corruption!! Floyd and Juju used to look like a toothpicks, now they are fat enough and eligible to replace bacon on the markets.

This is no rugby squad (the ultimate winners who dont rely on a worker’s union but performance), it is soccer (too many unproductive lazy struggle and political-revolutionary minded players who love perfecting their worker’s union membership than playing productively)…champions of toyi toyi and masters of no results and productivity.

Bafana might win against Mexico, and that is how far I commit my support for now, they just have to prove their worth beyond reasonable doubt (I wont accept anything less than being number 1 in the group, no loosing and no 0-0 draws). My support is conditional for now.

  63. I feel why should we support a team that is not even going to make it through the first round.
south africa is definately one of the worst teams ever, now dont get me wrong i am proud to be a south african but i refuse to support an all black team.
this goverment is more racist than me south africa has some of the best gymnasts, swimmers, runners, high jumpers, etc and they wont even try to put them into the olympics because they are all whites i mean when we get excellent blak people the government still wont put them through because the team has to be all black i mean what the hell so please dont tell me to support this country IT STINKS!!!!!!

  64. Ol' Pliny says

    Games were once traditional.
Has anyone heard of kennetjie or jukskei played outside of South Africa.
On the other hand, has curling ever been played in South Africa?
Hardly, it’s favourable to places like Scotland and Canada.

Soccer used to be traditional to England alone, simply because,
mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.

Even Blacks in those days used to grieve when they saw white men leave their huts.
Don’t believe me – Ask Noel Coward.
Blacks used to grieve when the white men leave their huts, because they’re obviously, absolutely nuts. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.

But, things have changed. Blacks all over the world excel in Boxing.
Greats like Jack Dempsy and James Corbett are very unlikely to make a come back.
And if they do, it will be a miracle if they successfully retain the title.
If Bafana bananas are too unfit for this, perhaps they should take up something more
    traditional like dollas throwing.
Now, please don’t take this spoof seriously. It’s a traditional thing.

  65. fanuel Jaravani says

i think they wil do great especialy after their gud game against Denmark,i wish them very gud lucky.I dont agree with people who rush to conclude, these people dont knw soccer.BIG UP BAFANA BAFANA.

  66. hector thuthelo says

if only our boys could stamp more control of their authority to their opponent, they must attack from the first whistle.never give your,e opponent time to regroup.instead of playing those back passes, the better they attack more than playing those back pass

  67. Bafana Bafana is ready for wrld cup.

  68. Gomza Dlamini says

I am a Swazi who fully supports Bafana Bafana and i would like to warn South Africans not to have a lot of expectations from the Bafana boys. Although they will be playing in home soil, we should not forget that this tournament is dominated by world class football players and we should know what our boys are capable of achieving.

Otherwise i think Bafana Bafana will play well and it will be a great achievement for them to progress to the next round.

  69. In shona we say Bafana Bafana ndizvo translated meaning Bafana Bafana have all at their disposalto win the world cup. If for SA to loose the world cup.

  70. amukelani says

i think faith is what we need so far, believe you me these guys are going far with our support, hope, either faith. we really don’t see any team that i think is a serious threat. viva bafana bafana viva. ha yi wina leyi khapu come what ever it takes we will be victorious.

  71. Popo Mgudlwa says

Their form is promising. They are confident and they stand a chance to take the World Cup.

  72. Nkutu William Moalosi says

With all the millions behind Bafana Bafana, coupled with their patriotism to the country & its people; their passion for the sport & skill recently displayed: there is no reason for them not to make those millions, including those still in their mothers’ wombs, proud. Go Bafana Bafana Go, make the SA people proud!

  73. With the positive attitude I’ve noticed from all the players, and the willingness to play for their country, “die with their boots on”, I see Bafana Bafana doing us proud during the World Cup. Their play has improved so much that I enjoy watching their games, unlike before. Bafana Bafana siya wina. We’ll be singing “Shosholoza” and blasting Vuvusela’s in support.

  74. D. Gonyora says

Bafana Bafana you have all what is needed to make it to the final! (shona)bora se bora,go bora chete.

  75. The beautiful game is trick one, at times you need a bit of some luck. south can still sail through to the next round.

  76. i think bafana can play better if they drop aron mokoena and mcbeth sibaya,if those two r playing i fear that we might loose, mokoena’s mistakes are going to cost us big time i think sangweni should take his place and mcbeth should be replaced by sundowns midfielder pattoson

  77. Vuvuzela says

    100% behind BAFANA BAFANA!!!

    1ST ROUND
    RSA 2 – Mexico 1
    RSA 1 – Uruguay 0
    RSA 0 – France 0

  78. bafana bafana will make it to the finals since they look well prepared

  79. erraheim says

    BAFANAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa…..sorry,i misplaced my vuvuzela.

  80. blatter is now really being reckless in his insistence that south africa host these games despite a litany of visible and tangible problems.the stampede was the last straw for him to enforce plan-b sinc they have not planned for stampede aftermath nor preventy them.

our infrastructure like policing, health, customer service is ailing and broken.preparations are rightwing based where beneficiariries and participants are whites and are mostly foreigners as we saw that performers in the initial list were white foreigners and blacks are called dirt that is being swept out of public focus.

  81. because they are playing at home, they got more supporters

  82. Ol' Pliny says

Tim, there’s an old saying that Solomon instituted four thousand years ago,
“There is nothing new under the sun.” In modern times it is known as,
“History repeats itself”, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”,
    “Been there, done that.”, etc…

It was possibly Abraham Lincoln who coined the phrase, “You can fool some of the people all
of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the
time.” Tax oppresssed Roman citizens, were temporarily suppressed when free circuses were
were introduced for their entertainment. (In S.A. The World cup circus)

All of a sudden the vandals struck. (In S.A. Union Strikes) Rome was sacked and a mighty world
power sunk to it’s knees. It happened to Egypt, Babylon and Assyria (Read up on ‘Sennacerib)

As they used to say in the pioneer movies, “The Natives are restless tonight”, restlessness is has
already showed it’s ugly teeth. Lettem celebrate, lettem strike, then watch the anarchic delivery
circus striking aftermath. You are one of the more intelligent who can read the weather.

  83. 100%bafana beat them african teams we are bihind u mak us proud shapa shap

  84. MONKATSO says

The cup is here and we hope that it stay here.I’m 100% sure that the world is going to see something that they never thought as South Africans we are capable of. Soccer is for Africa, now we are not feeling it we are doing it.Every nation black and white we are now excatly one ,where ever we turn the soccer fever is there. BAFANA DO US PROUD WE ARE PROUD OF YOU.

  85. MONKATSO says

Why do we south africans can’t believe in ourselves.Blatter was not bribed he believe in us making changes and giving opportunities to the unprevilaged, many people has learn to start a new life, \jobs have been created and many new things has happened.People coming here thought africa is a ZOO country, but once they are here they are thinking of staying forever, and if they leave they make sure they come back. So be proud and appreciate every opportunity you got cause it come once in the life time.

  86. b chipande says

well the sa coach is marvellous ,old xool doctrine doesnt wrk in this era .benni shld be happy to have a foul free service .south africa is the arsenal to stir it to the knock out stages.

  87. our boys are more than ready to kick off the game on Friday although I’m not that intrested in soccer it not my thing but maybe they will win that for sure

  88. the only way for Bafana to win w/cup is to turn stadium ups n down
yes they can win amteurs not mexico ,spain

  89. they talk about fighting soccer hooliganism but by opening up for the vuvuzela brigade they are encouraging, harbouring, aiding and abetting it since to blow them in public places disturbing public and individual peace and into someone`s ears its hooliganism squarely.

  90. I believe our boys are more than ready, look we have nothing to lose, Home advantage,Vuvuzelas and Parriera.

  91. HUMANS HAV 113 DECIBELS IN THEIR HEARING AIDS AND ONCE THEY REACH THE PEAK OF THEIR AGE THEY HAVE ONLY FIFTY LEFT AND VUVUZELAS WIPE OUT THAT ENIRE FIFTY AND ITS ON THIS REASON THAT I CALL FO THEIR BANNING UNTIL THEIR USERS SHOW SOME SENSIBILITY,RESPONSIBILTY AND DISCIPLINE.

  92. looking at Bafana’s performance on friday, i am impressed and think with more committment they surely will go into the second lag. AS a Mosotho residing in Lesotho, i a proud of these children of the soil. Bafana Bafana has unitedus. I wish we can do away with political parties and unite the nation with soccer politics. this can work very well.

i wish you can come to Lesotho to see the vibe and support for the boys.

  93. WE ARE ALL SUPPORTIVE OF THEM THEY MUST SHOW US THAT THEY CAN DO IT AND NOTHING CAN STOP THEM.

  94. Ol' Pliny says

An age old question which solicits only unbalanced answers:
“Do great expectations lead to disappointment?”

Someone on the net provided the best I’ve seen.
Perhaps we can all learn from her wisdom:

“Yes they do lead to disappointment
I hear people say “I was a little dissapointed , i expected more than that”
I use to have great expectations all the time and was continuously
dissapointed in the results so I set my standards really low and I was never disappointed.
I’m pretty sure it would also work for life goals.”

Too troo. It will also work for those who put too much faith in
    Bafana, Bafana, half ripe banana.

    Rule one:
Set your sights a little lower and the worst that can happen will be
a future victory that may stun you.
    Rule two:
Calling others pessimists may give them the last laugh..

  95. Evidence says

Well they played well just that luck wasn’t on our side.

  96. Manthata says

I am still over the moon with bafana bafana’s perfomance, It is the best perfomance I have seen in along time from our national team. It doesn’t matter that we did not go through to the next round, come 2014.

  97. The boys did their best. I am proud of you guys. Better luck next time. Well done.

  98. bLATTER SAID COUNTLESS TIMES THAT THIS wORLD cUP IS FOR mANDELA AND A NUMBER OF ITS FEATURES ARE NAMED AFTER HIM AND AS FAR AS i `M CONCERNED HE IS NOT sOUTH aFRICA AND sOUTH aFRICA IS NOT HIM SO i CANNOT sUPPORT TH GAMES OR STAKEHOLDERS UNTIL SUCH TIME WHEN WE WILL HAVE A GAME FOR sOUTH aFRICA AND ssOUTH aFRICANS.

  99. Ol' Pliny says

Tim, you’re right again. Sepp Blatter saying the world cup is for Mandela is
worth as much as saying “The money we make will all be given to charity.”

Have you noticed how nearly every brochure we get in our Dispatch has a
football or vuvuhella next to the adverts. That expression was probably in the
hope of filling the empty seats in the stadii which never escapes Sepp’s watchful
eyc. Some businesses try to trade in on patriocy, by adding to their adverts,
“We support the world cup.” Makes one stink – doesn’t it.

  100. Sepp Blatter referred the world cup as an honour to Tata Mandela. He will always be honoured for the change he brought to South Africa. He will always be a great man to this world. No matter what.

  101. Manthata says

Mandela the great man, you like it or not, he will continue to be honoured by the world over, if you Tim and Ol’Pliny can’t see that, you better start opening your eyes. this world cup was for Africa if you recall, we were honoured to be the hosts,
We became the pride of Africa because of our peaceful transition from your fathers apartheid minds, and that happened because of Tata Mandela. ( may he live longer)
The world loves him, if you two can not come to terms with that, take the next flight to your respective homes, and pray to God you do not find the name of Nelson Mandela hanging in your neighborhood.

  102. Ol' Pliny says

Manthata you are way off tune.
Tim and myself were referring to the purpose of the world cup.
Sepp Blatter implied (or lied) that it was done for Mandela.
He was merely sucking up to the old man
We all know that the World Cup is a money making racket.
    But we watch it anyhow.
Now go cool off your head with some Budweiser.

  103. Manthata says

    How diplomatic, thank you

  104. Ol' Pliny says

Manthata said to me > “How diplomatic, thank you”
Yes, it was indeed abrupt, but it had little to do with tact. Allow me to explain:
Thirty years ago I had a very austere boss. I thought he was what you think I am.
Over the years I hated him, but it was tempered a little by the fact he often passed
good compliments on my work performance.

One day I approached him and told him that I think he is rather tough on me.
Instead of flying off at me, he smiled and told me to sit down.
“Look (ol’ pliny) I have grown believe you are a fine manager, but you need to
be dressed down to size now and then. Learn to take the good along with the bad.
I made you the manager did I not? Whenever you jump to conclusions, or say
something stupid, you will get it in the neck. Think before you act or speak.
Do that and it will not be necessary for me to be harsh on you.”

Manthata, he is dead now, but remains my hero forever. He helped me as
no one else had ever done, from parent to preacher. I now try to be as tactful
as possible, when dealing with people who appear to be sensible and realistic.

But, if you also jump to conclusions as I did, or refuse to allow others to have
their say, then how would it help to be tactful with you. You may think we are afraid of you.
Now sit back, take another Budweiser then perhaps you too will become weiser.

  105. Manthata says

    Ol’ Pliny,
    Maybe you are the person I have been looking for, for a long time, here is my story;
I often find it difficult to engage in discussions that are out of context with what is being discussed, is it because I am too strict with my self or I just can’t go with the flow? sometimes when I meet a couple of friends talking about something that I know and I feel they are talking nonsense I try to explain, if they do not take my explanation, I live it as it is and read a book or do something. It is difficult for me to socialise because of that.
please advice, and I promise I will be reading your next comment drinking my Budweiser.

  106. Ol' Pliny says

Manthata, one of the phrases my baas taught me was “Search out the good in all.”
There is. Some develop it, in others it lies latent. Your post tends to indicate that
you are amenable to discipline. It really takes courage to suppress indignity.
Hear what the Lord’s word says: “Now, no chastening seems to be joyful for the
present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peacable fruit or righteousness to those who
have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)

You are on the way to becoming a more reasonable person.
Er,,, Now look, that Badweiser was a joke. Stick to good ol’ RSA Castle or Windhoek.

  107. I will support a patriotic World Cup where previous Presidents will share the stage and present President will share the stage with his opposition to show this is a South African Cup not a Luthuli House one.

Manthata:This Mandela that you embrace does not care a hoot about you but about his fledgling and bloated ego and status. That`s why when he heard that in his area there was gonna be enclosures and booms he never bothered to enquire as if it was not gonig to be another Group Areas Act in reverse!

Come have a look here in downtowns and see how cops are locking-up blacks then turn around and say`we are cleaning-up for 2010!Is this the freedom you utter Mandela secured for you?Mandela is the biggest hypocrat of them all since when he was in jail he was opposing unconditional releases but he accepted it when he was moved into the Victor Verster house and since then he never looked back but commercialised the struggle goals for the riches and luxuries they are sorrounded by now!

  108. Ol' Pliny says

Count me out when it comes to worshiping populists. In almost every country in
the world, people in power earn massive salaries, have everything of the best,
but little regard for the poor. Billions spent on the World cup is an excellent
example of the false concern they have for the poor.

The poor cannot eat freedom, and in fact, my own observations tell me that they are poorer than
pre-1994 and could well be worse off post World Cup. Take note how many hundreds line the
streets from early every morning till late afternoon, Monday to Saturday, begging for odd jobs.
Hence the high crime rate. No wonder government for many years denied the increase in crime.
It was far cheaper to turn a blind eye to criminal activity than to feed the poor.

Some of these, (and the well off) worship tata Mandela, which is of course their right.
For my part, I have great admiration for Evelyn Mandela, Mandela’s first wife, and firmly believe
that she has been the direct factor in the peaceful transition. She was a kind hearted, noble person,
who loved nothing better than being a good housewife and loving wife. Her love for Mandela was
so great that she began to dislike politics, and constantly begged him to stay out of that business.

She turned down the possibilty of one day being the first lady, who could travel the world in
luxurious fashion, to be admired by all. Mandela later divorced her and married Winnie. Instead of
being bitter, Evelyn continued loving him throughout all his years in prison, and on her miserable
earnings, cared for his, Sisulu’s and other children of ‘struggle heroes’ while they were imprisoned.

I wept when I hear of her death, and cut out the newspaper picture of her. This occupies a place of
honour in one of my photo albums. The humble, silent, unknown true hero of the struggle.
    Rest in peace my sister.

  109. HAHAHAA.OL`PINY-WHAT`S THAT LINCOLN VERSION AGAIN?OH JAA-REMEMBER IT NOW! “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”,hOWS THAT FOR THE WHOLE CONTINENT?CHANGES THAT WERE PROMISED HAS RESULTED INTO THE ENTRENCHMENT OF WHAT WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

YOU SEE,THIS MANTHATA OKE AND ALL THOSE WHO VOTED FOR THE RULING PARTY HAD NO OBJECTIVES OR PRINCIPLES BUT DID SO ON THE GROUND THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BENEFITTED IN CONTRAST TO WHAT EBVERYBODY THINKS THAT BLACKS VOTED FOR THEM.THE TRUTH COMES OUT WHEN THEY ARE SQUARING-UP WITH THE DA IN BYE.LECTIONS AND GET TROUNCED IN AREAS DFOMINEERED BY BLACKS LIKE FLATLANDS.

  110. Ol' Pliny says

Things are mostly rated one to ten, EG: Today’s top ten soccer blunders
supplement. Perhaps a future post mortem top ten could include the following:
    x) South Africa could have avoided the first round knock out shame by waiting
until at least 2030 before hosting a World cup.
By then they will likely have learned to emulate Rugby’s success.
Instead of an all Black team with an expensive, imported White coach,
a mixed team, with a local black marionette coach. In this way success
will depend on the captain and the strength of the team.
