Local Elections – Where is South Africa headed?

As South Africa heads into one more public holiday on Wednesday, 18 May 2011 – local elections day, Wonkie thought it fitting to publish the following article on the topic by a guest author, Samson Botsotso. Look forward to reading your thoughts on this opinion piece in the comments section below:

* * *

“THIS YEAR, LAST YEAR, LAST OF LAST YEAR, THEY PROMISE THIS, THEY PROMISE THAT, THEY PROMISE WHAT-WHAT”

– a resident of Zonk’iZizwe as quoted in an article by Dennis Becker
(The Star, 12 May 2011)

The rubbish piles up – humans make a lot of rubbish.
The shit from overflowing pit latrines piles up – humans make a lot of shit.
The water collects in mosquito-infested pools – broken communal taps leak and leak.
The road is high in mud or corrugated so badly vehicles can barely pass
– the promised layer of tar is yet to arrive.

Open toilets dominate electioneering; billboards exhort the passerby to show your “love” for the country by voting. The ANC/DA war hots up to the point of hysteria and Zuma invokes the ancestors to punish independent candidates who have sidestepped the ANC. It seems grotesque that the level of political debate and action has degenerated to such a level. And yet it is not only the sensationalist nature of journalism that gives blanket coverage to every utterance of demagogues like Malema; it is the doing of the parties themselves who employ rhetoric rather than careful analysis and democratic grassroots practice.

One thing though is clear: the squatter camp has become a key symbol of the New South Africa. It encapsulates both the opportunities of massive urbanization since 1994 and the inadequate state response to the desperate conditions of living of so many hundreds of thousands. Instead of national coordination to provide local government with a clear conceptual and financial framework for tackling the social and physical problems that arise, we have piecemeal approaches that are in most cases undermined by corruption and poor implementation.

Why is this? The most obvious reason is that the neo-liberal policies of the ANC/SACP alliance have discouraged a state-led response on the scale and energy that is required. As a result, seventeen years after Mandela led the Liberation Movement to become the “party of government”, we still do not have a social contract between Labour, Capital and the State to accelerate service delivery and job creation. And while the unemployed and others on the margins undertake protest action, they do so in a sporadic and localised way so that their mobilisation bears uneven and haphazard results.

What then of the ballot box? Is there no alternative but to engage in musical chairs and vote for the same bankrupt parties that make the endless promises the poor are so tired of? The answer to this is equally clear: as long as organized workers remain locked in the Alliance trying to reform the ANC (despite its long history of class collaboration), rather than putting this energy into forming a new mass based political organization, another generation will be thrown away in terms of the loss of human potential and life satisfaction.

Do workers, both the employed and the unemployed, not see this? Why do the organized, particularly in COSATU, stay loyal to the nationalist and increasingly racist rhetoric espoused by the ANC despite engaging in bitter wage battles against an ineffective and often corrupt state managerial class and a private sector obsessed with short term profit? And why do the unemployed engage in “delivery protests” with determination and zeal but still fail to counter a layer of tenderpreneurs and other blinkered opportunists (whether they be in the ANC, Inkatha, UDM, COPE or DA)?

The reality is that our society lacks credible leadership at all levels – but particularly in the workers movements. We are in a crisis of values that has stripped the cadres of yesterday (the revolutionaries, both internal and external) of any desire or determination to make the changes we need. There is a fat cat mentality most eloquently expressed by Smuts Ngonyama: “I didn’t join the Struggle to stay poor” (or words to that effect). The result of this mass sell out to individualism and ‘quick bucks’ has led to the bankrupt values of White South African business and its American counterpart dominating our discourse and behaviour.

These values, of course, have come to exemplify most African Liberation leaderships over the past fifty years, but the South African version is particularly depressing given the exceptionally strong mass organizations of the 1980s. In this regard we must note our toleration of so many ex-worker leaders (like Cyril Ramaphosa, Marcel Golding, Johnny Coplan, Jay Naidoo etc) who have become multi-millionaires and abandoned the struggle for a radically different society. If organized workers continue to “do business” with and show respect for them, can we begin to challenge the betrayal of fundamental change by Mandela and the other nationalist leaders?

We should have expected (based on historical precedent) that the nationalists would collaborate with Big Business, but the betrayal by worker leaders should cause real anger. But then perhaps we should not be surprised. In supporting the SACP, COSATU made a fatal choice. Have Stalinist Communists ever successfully advanced the goals of both political freedom and material equality? The recent formation of the Forum for the Democratic Left (that is, the anti-Stalinist Left) is perhaps a good omen but many of its leaders have histories of sectarian and anti-democratic practice themselves. It is thus not surprising that to date few mass organizations have joined it.

So we are stuck, and the hysteria will rise, and the election will come and go and business will continue as usual with workshops at expensive conference centres drafting more and more plans destined for half-baked implementation.

What then is the Way Forward? It can only be to revive grassroots organization a la Tahrir Square on a national basis, to re-energise and throw up a new layer of leadership and build organizations based on genuine respect for mandates, accountability and efficiency. How and when this new layer will emerge remains to be seen but the objective need has never been more urgent.

A short while back, Wonkie published an article on how the local election campaign strategies of the ANC and the DA have cross-fertilised somewhat. The ANC, this time around, is trying to capitalise on fear – particularly those around Nelson Mandela’s death. The DA on the other hand is reaching out and making promises of better service delivery, granted with a touch more credibility than the ANC.

Do leave your comments on this post and where you feel South Africa is headed following the excitement around the 2011 local municipal elections.

  1. Excellent article Samson – I believe SA currently lacks the quality leadership to take the country to the next level – from both the ANC, Cosatu and the DA. Everyone is too busy fighting about toilets and there is not enough focus on the setting the foundations that really count for the future.

  2. cylloria says

It is a sad state of affairs to see the ANC stoop so low and
Haggle with the DA over toilets and who did what. That they
Should fight over basic services is appalling and shows how much
They have lost focus. However, what other party can we vot in – the
DA? That would not be just foolishness, but stupidity. Who would want
To give the white power again. Zille is fooling herself if she truly believes
Blacks are going to vote her in. They are playing her, and she looks
Ridiculous when she’s dancing, does she really have to act stupid? Just because
JZ dances doesn’t mean she should follow suit, it doesn’t suit her.

  3. Andre Piek says

So much for higher thinking in South Africa – at this rate the country will get flushed down the toilet no matter who is in power. I am not optimistic about the local elections… hardly anyone I know has even bothered to register for it, let alone intending to vote!

  4. Down shit creek without a paddle

  5. Any1 who know how it feels,to be working, paying tax of more than R1400,but still can’t qualify for bond, nor Rdp house…?dats to me mean building a house for sum1 while stayin’ on de street.I’d lyk 2 vote for the government which protects it’s source of income.

  6. Forget the toilets. Compare the present state of the Western Province to what it was when the ANC was in charge. Unfortunately too many blacks still have the blinkered mentality of cylloria and would rather vote for a morally bankrupt, blatantly corrupt and intellectually deficient party than vote for a party that has a superior track record, just because there is a white woman at the helm. Cylloria, are you anti-white or anti-women, or both. If you vote for the ANC just NEVER complain about service delivery again. The ANC does not have the capacity or integrity to keep its promises and Zuma,s glaring lack of leadership has been an international embarrassment long enough.

  7. Imagine the Leaders of the present government taking an example from the late general Smuts, who was the leader and Prime Minister of South Africa.

General Jan Smuts put aside the Mansions and luxuries, that present day Leaders drown themselves in.

The small town Irene, near Pretoria was the home of Smuts and still stands as a monument to him.

It would give the ANC something to consider and compare, should they visit Irene and see the Wood and Iron house with a tin roof where He and “Ouma” Smuts lived during his term of Office and until his death.

Then as today, people were battling to put food on the table and Smuts rather than Lord it over his people, rejected the “High Life” and chose rather to live as one of them.

Let us not forget another member of the South African Parliament.
    Nicolaas Diederichs (1903-1978)

At first, Diederichs was the Minister of Finance and placed South Africa’s finances on a solid footing, so much so that he became known as “Mr. Gold”

He then became the President of South Africa and eventually died of a heart
ailment. Here comes the difference between him and our Leaders of today. President Diederichs, known as “Mr. Gold” died a Pauper. The country and not his pockets was his first and only ambition.

    My, how things have changed……

  8. Deena Naidoo says

Hey Cylloria, can you do a better job at running the country than Helen Zille. This issue about the open toilets in Macassa was brought into the open, just to discredit the DA and it’s prospective voters. Shitstirrers like Tony and Malema got their ‘cadres’ from the ANCYL and Cosathu to cause pandamonium by breaking down the toilets is Macassa. Did they offer to rebuild them????? NO!. But, unfortunately for them, the was other worse off toilets in other ANC areas as well. This was the ANC’s worse fuck-up. The more affluent ratepayers are carrying foreigners and residents by ‘donating’ their rates to the less fortunate areas, like electricity and water. Beggers cannot be choosers! No Cylloria, millions of blacks are fed up with your ANC govt. and are voting with their ‘heads and hearts’ for the DA.

  9. 10 cents says

what is exactly left for the future, if our intellectual capacity is dwindling at the rate that it is, the reason time and again the masses vote for the anc is because africa is tribal down to its roots always has been, as stated before we have no leadership in this country, i was at a tender meeting after hours just recently and had the project manager blatantly ask for kickbacks in return for the tender, my jaw was on the ground when eventually i came to the realization, that it is not the government but the people that allow for the corruption, if we as the people could live earnestly and not bribe the polliticians then there would be no need to for them to accept the bribe, how many of us have bribed a traffic officer ? it is this that leads to the corruption in our nation

  10. 10 cents says

i have no idea which management courses our pollitiacians have attended, it is first year management 101 plan, lead, organise and control it cannot be that hard

  11. Jaco has the sense of a block of wood, he is corrupt, dishonest and a liar how anyone can vote for him I honestly don’t know, it only proves that “the people” would vote for adolph hitler if he was representing the anc. After all our friend julli will still become state president simply because he will be on the anc ticket and can sprout a lot of pigshit.

  12. The whole political structure in our country is a hoax. Considering the complex situation of multi cultures unique in the whole world, we should not have political parties but rather people in ministerial positions who has the expertise in their particular professions selected by professionals in that professions. i.e. Minister of health should be elected by professionals that practice in health services. Minister of finance by financial experts etc: Political parties in our country are mostly driven by power and greed. One finds it extremely difficult to have respect for our so called leaders, as their doings has not been effective to earn respect. The outrages stupid comments by a socalled president to retain voters support reveals him as a nutcase.

  13. Cylloria spells it out correctly. No matter how much shit the ANC dumps on the people no matter how much shit the ANC talks, no matter how many toilets exposed or blocked, no matter how many service delivery protests take place these same people will vote for the shit they get no matter what.

  14. Deena Naidoo says

No Garth! Enough is enough. The time has come when all the sane thinkers, who either didn’t think of voting or didn’t bother to register, have now decided to do the right thing, and vote. BUT, to vote for the ‘least corrupt’ party, and that’s the DA.

  15. Why did you omit Tokyo Sexwale from the fellows who became rich? Maybe because he is inside the ANC ‘circl of power’

  16. cylloria are you implying that JZ does not look stupid when he dances but Helen does, what is the difference? Is it because blacks have ‘natural rhythm?

  17. All these replies here are excellent except Cylloria – I don’t think you know what true
Democracy is. Do you really want the ANC stay in power for ever? And not vote for change.

What was the struggle for if you carry on voting for a one party state. There is no place in SA for people like you who can say “DA? That would not be just foolishness, but stupidity. Who would want to give the white power again? Zille is fooling herself if she truly believes Blacks are going to vote her in.” you are just making a statement like blacks must vote for blacks & whites for whites. This is why nothing will change.

Come on get real, even JZ is getting scared for this election he is now prying on the ignorance of his follows by saying is you don’t vote ANC the ancestors will be unhappy and you will have bad luck the rest of you life. What an educated statement!! Are his followers really so stupid?

For the people that are not going to vote or are not registered to vote, don’t moan.

I will be voting for the DA

  18. Hey Cylloria, if you and any other anti-whites do not want to vote for ‘white’ DA, you can vote for COPE. Now that all the ANC moles who were assigned to destroy COPE have gone back to their party, COPE may the party your should vote for. Whatever, do not be stupid enough to vote for the ANC.
And to all the white sycophants with Afrikaans names who are standing for the ANC in places like Bloemfontein, I say shame on you. Your boot-licking will get you nowhere. Malema is laughing at you!!

  19. There are 2 other voting options. You can exercise a protest vote by putting an X in two places or you can vote for the Tiger. Amichand Rajbansi may have a reputation as being a manipulator. But ask his constituents, they will not vote for anyone else because he always delivers.

  20. the best way of development is to get rid of man in power and we shall be free from oppression

  21. Jen asks “Are his followers really so stupid?” I don’t think that the question warrants a reply.

  22. The topic: Where is S A going? anybody can already see the results of the past 15 years. Many are so brainwashed to believe that only the anc fought the struggle, what about all others who never claimed fame or publicity that contributed to the change in a quiet wise way without causing bombings, violence or any form of disruption or disturbance. Those are the backbone of our democracy. The two destroying factors of our civilisation is the anc and the awb we certainly do not need them here.

  23. I don’t know if this is a hoax email or not.

    “Dear all
I am working at a local polling station (overseeing vote counting).
Please tell all your friends to DOUBLE CHECK their voting paper is STAMPED at the back otherwise their vote does not count.
I counted at the last election and ALL votes with no stamp of the local polling station were not counted. That is the very first item on the list that we check and the votes without stamps at the back are discounted immediately.”

You know how bad the corruption is so I supposed that a “party” could manipulate the papers so that they are invalid

  24. Considering this is only a local elections and not general it will still be an indication of what is to be expected at the next general election. Fully agree with Peanuts that the anc and awb should be banned

  25. Andrea Dalton says

I tend to agree with your sentiments but I really hope that the poor are not fooled by the ancestor bullshit or an ANC poster I saw recently with white boys ‘riding’ black boys, holding crops. The ANC have raped this country for long enough and treated the poorest of the poor with utter contempt. Whoever gets in cannot possibly do a more appalling job than the ANC has.

  26. [Edited to include link]:

RESEARCH AND POLICY BRIEF: SOUTH AFRICA: FINDING A WAY FORWARD – 28TH MARCH 2011.
    – John Kane-Berman, 10 March 2011.

  27. Sorry I was still trying to finish my comment when an urgent skype call came through. Any party or organisation that proclaims any form of violence or racism should not be supported in any way. The country belongs to all who are legal citizens and specially to ALL who were born here. Nobody can deny them that right except if they are criminals, or drug dealers. Those that have property rights and paid for it from their own pockets belongs to them and not the state. Are we advancing under the anc to communism that has proofed to be a disaster and fails to really accommodate the poor.l

  28. notaround says

hello to Jen and Peace. I see we are at it again here. I don’t need to say a thing you two got it right as per usual .
    Just one thing:
DA has screwed up badly by not getting the white youth involved. I had one hell of an argument with our local counsellor when I asked her why we do not organise a youth rally. “it is not in our culture” was her answer. Aaaarrrggghh please, we threw a boerewors roll and a beer party , for them to enter the gate they had to show they had registered. My kids will do it again for Wednesday. South Africa’s future lies in the youth, whether white or black and it is up to our generation to educate them.

  29. – notaround, I have totally over looked that. Graet idea the boerewors roll and a beer party!

  30. notaround says

@ Jen, not exactly a hoax but………………….I found this information:

    Voting Day – Vital Information
13 May 2011 By Alan View Comments
There is an e-mail doing the rounds with the title “Voting Day – Vital Information”. As with all chain typr e-mails the first thought that hits ones mind is that it is a lot of crap.

But, as this years local elections are pretty vital I had a sniff around to check the veracity of the mail which reads:

I am working at a local polling station (overseeing vote counting).

Please tell all your friends to DOUBLE CHECK their voting paper is STAMPED at the back otherwise their vote does not count.

I counted at the last election and ALL votes with no stamp of the local polling station were not counted. That is the very first item on the list that we check and the votes without stamps at the back are discounted immediately.

As per normal I so wish that these well intentioned people would actually check what they have written BEFORE hastily pushing the send button. The author of the e-mail is correct but rather have sent the message below out instead of wasting our time:

These are the steps will probably be followed in the voting station (They may change slightly in regulations that may be issued closer to the elections):

Queue walker checks voter’s ID with Zip-Zip, while voter is in the queue outside, to make sure voter is at the right voting station
Voter shows ID at the first table inside
Voter’s name is crossed off the voter’s roll.
Voter’s hand is examined to see if it has been marked.
The hand is marked to see that the voter does not vote again. The ID book will also be stamped.
The voter is given a ballot paper for the local council, ward and district (unless in metro area, then only two ballots).
An official stamp is put on the back of the ballot papers. It is VITAL that you check that this is done – NO stamp, NO Vote!
The voter goes into the voting booth and makes a cross for one party or candidate on each of the ballot papers.
The voter folds the ballot papers and puts them into the correct ballot boxes. An election official will check to see that the ballots have the stamps on the back before they are placed into the boxes.
If you fear a conspiracy is underfoot to make your vote ‘disappear’ then do yourself a favour and print the above procedure out, take it along with you and tick off the steps as they happen on 18 May 2011.

  31. notaround says

    @ Tanni – *chuckle*

  32. notaround says

@ Jen, I send it by FAcebook to my teenagers friends, who then sent it to theirs. It was so worth it.

  33. We have had big youth meetings in our area, training them how to be a constructive contribution to society and not to live a handout life. Voting is a responsible part of our lives and we have to vote for candidates that are responsible people. The DA candidate for mayor of JHB is one such person. He walks his talk and he has been known to us from his schooldays. He certainly will get our vote.

  34. During the last 16years the ANC have had the majority rule the only people to have benifited are the corrupt polititions no wonder they rather attack the opposition parties with lies than to show the people what good they have done which i am sorry to say is zero so any one voting for ANC are putting corupt oeople back in power

  35. Believe it or not says

If you want to flush your vote down the open toilet, vote Anc or DA

  36. Believe it or not says

    2019 VAVI for President

  37. The first thing government should do is impose super tax for the super rich and use that money for the poor. Al taxes paid by medical and insurance companies to be used for health care facilities. Taxes paid by education institutions to be used for education. There are more then enough other tax payers to cater for other infra structure requirements. There should be a geovernment audit department like there use to be before 1994 that kept investigated and watched how the funds were used. There was hardly a way that anyone could steal tax money as blatantly as it is now. This geovernment consists of thieves.

  38. Peanuts: A super tax of the super rich would mean that all the ANC cronies would have all there ill-gotten gains used to benefit South Africa and they would never allow that. There is an auditor general who inspects all government departments for correct running thereof and judicious spending. This is why the vast majority have what are called ‘qualified audits’ where unaccounted for expenditure or other mismanagement is noted and corrections advised. The advice is naturally ignored since the perpetrators of the inefficiencies know that the leadership can never take them to task as they are in 98% of the time equally guilty and their supporters hope to one day get onto the same gravy train where they too can loot the public purse

  39. notaround says

@ cylloria – have to agree with you on the dancing bit of Zille, looks totally silly. As for whether a white or a black party, I do not give a sh..t, excuse the pun as long as we have someone beyond corruption who will get things done and place competent people in the ministry instead of family and buddies.

  40. Something in my line of duty just came to mind. The majority of people mix and associate mostly with the same principles and vices as themselves. So if the anc gets the majority again it actually means that the majority of our society is corrupt. Thieves, fraudsters etcetera is not going to vote for a party that condemns such actions as it will effect their lifestyle and their jobs. What a horrifying thought this is.

  41. whatever says

@Peace – same old story all over Africa. No surprises there, must be “their culture”

  42. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A MOB OF STUPID PEOPLE

  43. Sr. Susan says

notaround thanks for the information about the ‘stamp’ I am working at the local school on Wednesday. I shall make sure that the papers are the ‘right ones’..I’m really looking forward to seeing those who want to make a change…

  44. Sr. Susan says

joesoap, that link to The Institute of Race Relations speech by John Kane Burman, is the best piece of writing I have read in a long time. Every teenager should read it and grow in mind capacity.. for it sure forces you to think a little more..simply and with absolute clarity shows real possibilities to solve complex situations..

  45. So I have made up my mind who to vote for, it is someone mam knows and has told me all about him. We pray and trust that he will be Jhb’s next mayor and he belongs to the DA. He has a few degrees and is a very rightous man.

  46. SHOCK. HORROR! – Got home yesterday to fine more posters on the lamp post (orange ones.) saying: “SACP says vote ANC”. They have never campaigned in my area before. Are the ANC a little bit nervous?

@ notaround – Thanks for the info, cleared it up. I see today’s papers have also run a story on it.

@ peace – I agree “DA candidate for mayor of JHB”

@ Believe it or not – no pun intended? Right? – I think not

@ Peanuts – glad you have made you mind up

  47. To those who are going to vote tommorrow Goodluck. My DA federals please remember to do what Mandela did yesterday Vote ANC. There is no doubt that he voted ANC. Do not be misled, Vote ANC. Those of you who are not sure who to vote for give DA a chance because together we can build more communities.

  48. It is about time we change for the better of all citizens. Voting for the DA will proove that we can all stand together as a nation for EVERYBODY not just a few who is only there for self enrichment that must end NOW!!!

  49. notaround says

@Jen – ANC is very nervous ! No doubt about it. Good reason to be too.
To all of you who can vote ( I cannot) put your votes towards the one Party who will be able to make a difference in this municipal election. All the small parties will not be able to halt the ANC wave, so you have to vote DA , whether you think of it as black or white. Colour is not really an issue. We have to think of it as who will get the job done and do it properly ??

Election 2011: National Campaign Launch speech

    26 March 2011

    Statement by
    Mmusi Maimane
    DA Candidate for
    Mayor of Johannesburg

This speech was delivered at Kliptown, Soweto, today’s event is a celebration of change.

Change that each one of us can believe in.

Today is a celebration of how our party, the Democratic Alliance, has changed from a party of opposition to a party of government.

Today is a celebration of how growing numbers of South Africans are embracing the DA, and our vision of an open, opportunity society for all.

Today is a celebration that on the 18th of May, each one of us can use the power of our vote to bring change to Johannesburg.

On Election Day, we will have the chance to follow the people of Cape Town, and Midvaal, and Baviaans, and those in the other areas where the DA governs, in embracing change, and bringing the DA’s record of better service delivery for all to the people of Johannesburg.

Today I say to you: Change is possible in our city.

I have lived in Johannesburg all my life. I grew up in Soweto, and love this city and its people.

I am therefore deeply honoured to be nominated as the DA’s mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg.

I believe that the DA can bring to our city what it has brought to the municipalities where it already governs.

I believe that the DA will tackle unemployment in Johannesburg like it has done in Midvaal. The lesson from Midvaal is clear- good, clean government attracts investment, which creates jobs. This is the only way to beat poverty.

I believe that the DA will deliver quality services to all, and place the needs of you, the people of our city, above petty politics and self-interest.

I believe in the power and possibility of change.

I have learnt this lesson from countries around Africa, whose people have transcended their country’s past and voted for change they believe in- people like those in Senegal, who in 2000 voted the Senegalese Democratic Party into power, marking the first time that the Socialist Party and its predecessors had lost power since independence.

I have learnt this lesson as I watch the struggles of those whose fight for change is just beginning- the youth of Egypt, the people of Libya.

And I have learnt this lesson from our own party, which, in the 1994 election won only 1.7% of the vote, and is now the official opposition, and a party of government in the Western Cape. The 2009 election was a watershed moment for our party and our country. South Africans believed so much in change that they showed up in their numbers to vote. This year’s local government election is even more critical to the DA’s future, and that of our country, as on the 18 May we will be laying the foundation for the 2014 national election, and beyond.

Soweto, on the 18 May we have the chance to make history in Johannesburg.

To those that doubt the DA’s determination to bring change to this city, let me say this: the DA is in this race to win it! I am here to win!

To each of you here today, to those listening on radios or watching on televisions in distant parts of our wonderful country, I call on you to contribute to change by voting DA on Election Day, and helping our party to win this city.

I know that for many of you, making this change will take much courage. On my path to this stage in Soweto, I too have had to face my fears, and confront the criticism of others. But let us not forget that our great nation was forged in the fire of courage.
We need the courage to stand up for the future, and not allow our past to hold us hostage. In the five years since the last local government election, we have seen more dissatisfaction and less delivery, we have seen those in power serving their own interests, rather than serving the interests of the poor.

We, the people of Johannesburg, deserve a city where there is opportunity for all.

We deserve a city that attracts investment, generates growth and creates jobs.

    We deserve a well-run city.

We deserve a city that is safe for us and our families.

We deserve a city that is caring and delivers basic services, housing and primary healthcare to those in need.

We deserve a city in which every one of us feels at home and has a stake in the future.

We deserve the chance to make a change, and that time is now.

The DA still has much work to do. We will not rest until we have delivered the highest quality services to all citizens.

With the continued support of the people in the areas that we govern, the DA can continue to make great municipalities even greater. And, wherever the opportunity to govern is extended to us, we can deliver the same difference.

Today, Soweto, let us do all that we can to give Johannesburg this opportunity. Today, Soweto, let us get on every street, climb on every bus and taxi, talk on every cell phone and spread the word that together, on the 18 May, we can bring change to our city.

    Phambili Joburg DA phambili!

  51. I must say Mmusi’s speech is very good, whoever wrote it for him is a very good writer, very poetric. Lets hope people will fall for that.

  52. @ notaround – awesome speech I hope he does get in.
And I agree with you sentiments lets get a strong oppistion (DA), colour should not come into it.

@ Believe it or not / @ peace – the way to go!

  53. @Believe it or not – yes, Madiba voted yesterday, but I am sure , if he voted ANC, he spoilt his vote. Madiba’s ANC is dead. It died at Polokwane in 2007, when it was taken over by a bunch of greedy, mostly under-educated, morally corrupt, self-serving hyenas. Anybody who stands for, or votes for them, must be of the same ilk – political opportunists totally devoid of conscience or shame. Or totally ignorant and uninformed.
Where is South Africa headed? Down the toilet, Bru. Down the uncovered ANC toilet, unless the decent people left in this amazing country can stand together tomorrow and rid this country of the vermin infestation that is supposed to be the government.

  54. I do not trust DA yet but i think they should be given a chance to manage some of the municipalities to prove their worth. Getting unqualified Audit reports does not necessary mean you are the best. ANC has all the good policies but absolute POWER is corrupting them absolutely. Lack of leadership on the part of ANC is even worst. Perhaps if power can be shared South Africa will be the best country.

  55. Firstly I did not want to jot it down on Wonkie but I am now. The anc signed their own death certificate with their blasphemis statements. It is not difficult for those who know and have seen that when this happens God almost responds with immediate action, so they may still get through this election but it is quite obvious it is going to be the last for them.

  56. Peanuts fails to understand the impact of high taxes. Simple the rich bugger off to a tax haven and remove their investments and fire all their workers. Peanuts also fails to understand the economics of taxation for instance there is a point where once taxes reach that point workers stop overtime to avoid the tax, consumers buy less and as aforesaid the rich go. The net result is a slowing down of the economy. Taxation is not just a cow to be milked it needs careful economic analyses to maximise its effect.

  57. I fail to understand why Believe it or not does not trust the DA. The ANC has failed miserably to run municipalities effectively yet most voters give them another chance. Municipalities run by the DA have a better record than many others and Cape Town is the best run municipality in the land. What’s not to trust.

  58. @ Garth – 100% well said

@peace – I do still think that ANC will continue to get thru as the majority party for some years yet (to my disgust). Hopefully it won’t take the DA too long before them catch up. But this will depend on how long people are willing to vote for an empty promised party or how long they want to watch them spend money unwisely.

@tanni – I agree with your first paragraph totally

Happy voting day tomorrow – all the best for the DA may they increase there numbers by thousands!

  59. Thanks Garth for the lesson, I am still young and just did grade 12 last year and have not yet entered the corporate world. But I can see that money has gone down the drain and even Sars are having corruption problems. Surely there is a way to spread and apply tax monies correctly. I happen to know that even customs earns mega bucks via import duties.

  60. @Garth corrupt ANC does not necessarily make DA an angel, it is sad that some of the black people who are advertising DA on TV live in an extreme poverty. some do not even have electricity ofcourse you might have notice an old black woman who claims to have recieved this and that from DA. I know that old woman is lying. Transformation within the party does not reflect the dynamis of this country, not even close. We all know the history of this country and the imbalance of our past, until such times that DA policies tackle the issue of Affirmative Action head on they can forget about my vote. There is too much pretention here.

  61. So where are we heading? Obviously down the loo!

  62. SIDNEY COAD WILLIAMS says

SOUTH AFRICA AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE ARE IN A STATE OF TRAUMA BECAUSE OF POLITICIANS AND OFFICIALS BEING CORRUPT AND ENGAGING IN ENRICHING THEMSELVES WITH TAX PAYERS FUNDS. THESE DEMONSTRATIONS THAT WE SEE ON TELEVISION AND IN THE MEDIA IS A COMMON RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE. UNFORTUNATELY THE PEOPLE ARE PRONE TO DEMONSTRATE IN A VIOLENT AND DESTRUCTIVE WAY.

WHAT WE NEED WORLDWIDE IS A FORM OF GOVERNMENT THAT IS MERIT ORIENTATED. WHEN MERIT IS APPLICABLE THERE IS NO DISSENT BECAUSE THE PRINCIPLES OF MERIT TO WIT: HONESTY, CIVILITY AND JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCE IS THE NORM. MERIT BEGETS QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY. MERIT PROMOTES PEACE.

MERIT IS DEFINED AS HAVING THREE PRIME QUALITIES AND THAT IS:

HONESTY CIVILITY AND JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCE.

GO WELL MY ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND PLEASE PROMOTE THE QUALITIES OF LOVE AND ELIMINATE THE HATE THAT APPEARS TO BE SO PREVALENT.

  63. Yes Ron. As a young boy I often accompanied my mother on her campaign trail for Smuts and the United Party of which the DA is the latest mutation. Smuts, being the statesman he was (our last before Madiba) saw South Africa could not continue on the racial road and the Nationalists grabbed onto this and what followed was “die swart gevaar” and the fertilizer the country is in now is a direct consequence of that. The DA is so maligned. “Under white capitalism we remain poor and unemployed” they bleat. Sorry, but you were poor and unemployed before a white man set foot on Africa. Show a bit of gratitude for what the white man gave you. Its better than running round in skins and living in mud huts. You would have been thankful for a corrugated iron toilet enclosure then.

  64. If any ANC aficionado has any doubts about who their politicians are looking after read South Africa’s Ministerial Handbook Uncovered by DR McKinlley. Google Ministerial Handbook South Africa. The difference between wealthy whites (and blacks) and politicians is that the wealthy have to work smart to become wealthy. The politicians confiscate tax payer’s money

  65. Please scroll up to JOESOAP and offload the paper by John Kane-Berman from the South African Institute of Race Relations and keep it ready for the next general election to mail to everyone you know. Make hard copies and distribute to those without computers but who can read.

  66. WHAT THE PEOPLE OF OUR WORLD MUST ACCEPT IS THAT WE ARE ALL ANCESTRALLY RELATED.

WE ARE ALL ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

LET US BEHAVE AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

PROMOTE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER AND ELIMINATE HATE.

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE AND ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVE.

SOURCE 1. THE BIBLE REVEALS THAT ADAM AND EVE WERE CREATED BY A SUPREME BEING. IF THIS IS TRUE THEN WE ARE ALL ANCESTRAL BFOTHERS AND SISTERS.

EVOLUTIONISTS CLAIM THAT WE EVOLVED IN AFRICA. IF THIS IS TRUE THEN AGAIN WE ARE ALL ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

ACCEPT THE OBVIOUS AND PROPAGATE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER.

GO WELL MY ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

  67. @Sydney I fully agree with you there is far too much negativity and hate doing the rounds. If people just for once change to a positive loveable attitude they will experience much joy in their hearts. Only constructive critisism is good when given with the intention to help someone become positive. Love conquers, hate promotes wars, violence and all that is evil. We do however hate the wrong that people are doing but it does not mean we hate the human and therefor we constantly have to pray for them to find innerhealing.

  68. its for the poiticians to get rich in our votes .i nw conquer with those who say politics is the next growing business industry in the world.Mr Zuma son friend waz a traffic cop now owns fleet of cars and a top class car as a ru around car .as a birthday gift for her babes was astorn martin coz of this silly tenders.be a ppolitician and get rich

  69. IT IS WITH A SAD HEART THAT I SEE THE DEMONSTRATIONS ON TELEVISION AND READ THE REPORTS THEREOF AND THE ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION, THEFT, FRAUD AND INDULGENCE AT THE TAX PAYERS EXPENSE NOT TO MENTION THE ALLEGATIONS OF POOR SERVICE DELIVERY.

THIS IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM ALTHOUGH SOME NATIONS FARE BETTER THAN OTHERS.

EVERY TIME THERE IS AN IMMINENT ELECTION THE PROMISES OF GOOD GOVERNMENT AND GOOD SERVICE DELIVERY ABOUND BUT ONCE THE ELECTED PARTY IS IN POWER THE PROMISES ALLEGEDLY DO NOT APPEAR.

ORDINARY CITIZENS GET REBELLIOUS WHEN THEY SEE HOW TAXPAYER’S MONEY IS WASTED ON ENRICHING SOME POLITICIANS, MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS AND MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES.

SOME COUNTRIES ARE EXPERIENCING THE RESULTS OF DICTATORIAL GOVERNMENTAL PROCEDURES AND ABUSE OF TAX FUNDS. THE MEDIA IS FULL OF THE RESULTS OF SUCH ABUSES.

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS IS APPLICATION OF MERIT. ALL PEOPLE MUST BE CHOSEN ON THE BASIS OF MERIT TO ENSURE QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY.

MERIT IS BASED ON THREE FACTORS. THEY ARE:
    HONESTY
    CIVILITY
    JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCE.

WE MUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT WE ARE ALL MEMBERS OF THE HUMAN RACE.

    WE ARE ALL ANCESTRALLY RELATED.

CREATIONISTS (PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE) CLAIM THAT A SUPREME BEING CREATED ADAM AN EVE.

EVOLUTIONISTS BELIEVE THAT ALL HUMANS EVOLVED IN CENTRAL AFRICA.

WHATEVER ONE BELIEVES THE REALITY IS THAT WE ARE THE DESCENDANTS OF A SMALL GROUP THEREFORE WE ARE ALL ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

HERE IS A EXAMPLE OF EVOLUTION:

A MAN AND A FEMALE HAVE SEXUAL INTERCOURSE. SEMEN CARRIES MILLIONS OF SPERM INTO THE VAGINA OF THE FEMALE WHICH ENTER THE EGG IN THE FEMALE. CELL DIVISION STARTS AND THE FINAL PRODUCT IS AN INFANT.

A SIMILAR PROCESS OCCURS IN PLANT LIFE. PLANTS ARE FERTILIZED BY THE WIND AND THE BIRDS AND THE BEES. A SEED IS PRODUCED. THE SEED FALLS ON THE GROUND AND IN THE PRESENCE OF NUTRIENTS IN THE SOIL, WATER AND THE HEAT OF THE SUN A NEW PLANT IS BORN.

THESE ARE SIMPLE EXPLANATIONS OF THE EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS.

VARIATIONS OF SPECIES OCCUR WHEN THERE ARE MUTATIONS OF CELLS DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS.

PROMOTE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER AND ELIMINATE HATE.

GO WELL MY ANCESTRAL BROTHERS AND SISTER.

  70. SA Elections?

  71. SA Elections
While walking down the street one day a “Member of Parliament” is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

‘Welcome to heaven,’ says St. Peter. ‘Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.’

‘No problem, just let me in, ‘says the man.

‘Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity’.

‘Really, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,’ says the MP.

‘I’m sorry, but we have our rules.’

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises …

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

‘Now it’s time to visit heaven.’

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realises it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

‘Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity’.

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: ‘Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell. ‘

So St. Peter escorts him to the lift and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the lift open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and rubbish.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more rubbish falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. ‘I don’t understand, stammers the MP. Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of rubbish and my friends look miserable. What happened? ‘

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, ‘ Yesterday we were campaigning …

    Today you voted.’!!!!!!!

    @ Jen – LOL

  73. podwalker says

Where is SA headed. For higher taxation on the citizens who do a full days work. Why? Because now the ANC is running out of money at a rapid rate.
To stay as the leading party –
They need to continue to pay the grants (to those who do not work),
The child grants to those who do not work and just have babies (and more and more babies – the more you have the more money you get – easiest thing in the world…)
The immigrant refugee grant for those who do not belong here and do not work.
The disabled grant for those who cannot /want to work.
The pensioners grant for those who think they are too old to work.
The free water, the illegal electricity connections, all cost money.
And who pays – not the GOVERNMENT as so many of the peoples believe – the government only exists because of the taxpayer.

With an entire young generation of working, able-bodied, educated, intelligent, skilled south african workers having left the country in the last few years – the tax base is becoming smaller and smaller.
    3.5 million taxpayers supporting 50 million others…….

And all these others demanding free houses, roads, sanitation, education, grants etc etc from the “GOVERNMENT”… (won’t get off their backsides and do anything for themselves will they? – like children…)

And we, the taxpayer, the ratepayer, moan about the state of the roads, the infrastructure, the lack of service, the inefficiency, the disinterest, the costs of government departments.

    WE AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET…..

  74. ! Podwalker your reasoning is totally logical and can not be denied. There is one thing however you must keep in mind. The anc will win this election with the majority and that is fine as it falls within the plan of the Almighty, they are going to have a major battle to try and produce their promises which can never be done as the money is diminishing much too fast. Billions have been lost and will be lost within the next 3 years. This however will cause a catastrophy but for those who serve, trust and love the LORD and obey his commands which is really not that difficult will survive as they form the backbone of the country. First of all it is prayers that has been uttered for a peacefull election that was once again answered. When the time comes it will be those who are constructive that will rebuild this country again, then there will be jobs again . The following 3 years will be critical to get people to change their hearts (that is more important then changing your political party). When your heart is right and you have Heavenly wisdom no know what to do, what to say and how to handle any situation. We are living in the very last days and GOD has a plan for SA and it will come to pass we must just not be like the Israelites and start squeelling and turn to gods that can do nothing or it may also take another 40 years before that happens.
We have to remain faithfull and continue to trust and obey and start educating people why we were created and what our responsibilities are. In our community we have had so much success but this needs to be done throughout the country and a few alone can not handle such a major task.l
So lets remain positive and trust the ONE that can do anything we ask if we remain faithfull to HIM.

  75. @Peace: Take your religion and go shove it up your ass. Nobody is interested in your superstitions. Your imaginary friend isn’t going to help us out of this mess, only real people with real hands to do real work with can make a difference. The ANC has just received an overwhelming “YES!” from the public of South Africa to continue stealing, have illegitimate children and show up to work drunk. Clearly the majority of South Africa is morally irrecoverably corrupt. This is their reward for blaspheming the same imaginary fairy friend that you hold so dear, so if you’re waiting for a response from the “ONE” you’re going to die waiting.

  76. I hate to denigrate ones faith and religion, but realist is right. If there was a good lord looking after us he would not have given us the godless thieves who run our country.

  77. @ Garth, Hi I like your reasoning I somehow I do agree with you it certainly makes one wonders. My children who are in their 4o’s have the same logic as you with the exception of my daughter. After many years of reasoning with the LORD HE has clearly shown me that HE is given man freedom of choice and it is the choices of many of our citizens who clearly worships that God forbids who brings this famine upon the world. Read Leviticus 20 v6 If people go the consult the spirits of the dead I will no longer consider them my people. Please be patient as the time has come and soon the action will be taken as GOD certainly answers, He is never too late and never too early. We are living in a period of grace on account of GOD’s love and mercy and is giving everybody time to repent and turn to HIM until the day of judgement which has not yet come but is to happen very soon. The evil one knows that his time has run out and therefor doing his damnest to wreck lives and have a lot worshipping him. Those who have passed on certainly has no means of contacting the earthlings there spirits are either with GOD or in that place where there is no fire escape. My ex who I was married to for 6 years tried to take my life a couple of times, he hated GOD , I was in ICU in 1971{already seperated} and passed over to his hearts content only the next day he got the surprise of his life when he heard that I was back TOTALY healed. I did not see GOD but I heard HIS voice commanding the angel of death to take me back it is not my time. The nurse and the specialist was stunned they too could not believe it and when I signed myself out of the clinic a day later I was showered with forms to sign that I can not take any action on the Drs or the clinic if I drop dead again when I leave the premises. That incidence changed my life completely, and I am sure if I did not love God and served HIM the way I do this would not have happened. Whatever message I ever receive always comes to pass, After my divorce I did not want to marry again , once bitten twice shy but GOD told me he was sending me someone to marry because two are better then one if the one falls the other is there to help him up. 17 years later I met my current husband and I can not begin to tell you how wonderful our relationship is and how we support each other and hve been married now for 23 years. In the 1st year I was married to my ex he joined the evil movement of scientology that changed him into a demon. There are many in our country who have previously due to their customs and their up bringing who use to worship ancestoral spirits that have repented and been delivered from the evil powers. I had the privilege to witness some being delivered and set free at Kwasiza Bantu in Zululand and believe me it is an awesome sight witnessing GOD’s Powerful action. Please believe me that I am not boasting or trying to get people to think that I am so holy , I sometimes can not understand that the LORD can love me as I feel like a worm and yet HE constantly keeps me joyful and happy and I feel for people who do not have GOD’s love, grace and protection they truly miss out much happiness and joy on account of their wrong choices. Evil is always the opposite of GOD, it hates, destroys, has no joy, murders, rapes, steals and abovel all ful of condemnations. Soon in the very near future (I think the nail is in the coffin for many after the latest proclamation shortly before election) you will see horendous happenings in SA but the pure will not be affected we will survive on account of GOD’s mercy for HIS people. The current rulers will not be able to handle it and in fact will not even understand it, they are not even aware of the fact that they caused it by their own choices. For the oppositions this is a Blessing in Disguise as the time is near for them when they are going to have to rebuild but will receive Wisdom and power from above to enable them to do so. I know for a fact even though I personally do not know him but of him that the oppositions candidate for JHB is an annointed man, GOD fearing , faithful wiith a tremendous aptitude to change everything for the better and that is the power of GOD working in him to prepare him for a very big task. I ask you to bear with me as I do not want to sound like a prophet of doom but can not help when I get these revelations to mention them but I understand when I do I have to share it more for a warning to help and not to condemn. I certainly pray for all in our country so their spiritual eyes may be opened and they can truly see that GOD is real and can change their hearts so it may become pure. In the 70’s I had the revelation about our country being totally delivered and it does seem now to be looking worse but be assured it will happen shortly. It took 20 years of praying for freedom for all which only happened in 1994 but GOD was faithful and did it and we had major problems convincing many that the system was wrong and eventually their hearts also changed. The majority was not even aware of that they tried to bring about change with violence and protests and think it was that that brought the change and it was not. I know that one person with GOD is always in the majority the rest is outnumbered and can not do anything to prevent HIS goodness even though they reject HIM and think they have all the power they are outnumbered. I trust and pray that your spiritual eyes will open soon and bear witness of the greatness of the LORD LOL

  78. Morning Peace, I am sending this message via Wonkie for everyone to see and not to you via email. Yesterday when I got back to campus and told all my friends about our revelation of the elections and the issues that are going to happen on account of blasphemus proclamations by the rulers. We switch the radio on and the first report we heard was that an anc candidate that had just won a ward from the IFP had just passed away. Wow that just blew our minds as we were just discussing the issue. We are convinced that what we were told is truly going to happen. By the way in 5 weeks time I will be in Lincoln county in the USA and is looking forward to go. Have a wonderful weekend all of you and remember God is only a prayer away. Love you all.

  79. IF ANY COUNTRY IS SERIOUS ABOUT OBTAINING A CORRUPTION FREE GOVERNMENT THEN THEY SHOULD GO FOR MERIT.

    MERIT BEGETS QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY.
MERIT IS BASED ON THREE FACTORS AND THEY ARE
    HONESTY – CIVILITY AND COMPETENCE.

WITH A GOVERNMENT AND MUNICIPAL SERVICES ELECTED ON MERIT THE POPULATION BOTH RICH AND POOR CAN EXPECT EXCELLENT SERVICE DELIVERY. THEY CAN EXPECT THEIR CHOSEN REPRESENTATIVES TO BE GENUINE SERVERS OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS. THE CHOSEN ONE’S WILL NOT HAVE CRIMINAL RECORDS OR TENDENCIES. THEY WILL BE NON CORRUPTIBLE, HONEST, CIVIL AND COMPETENT.

DISHONESTY, INCIVILITY AND INCOMPETENCE IS A WORLDWIDE PROBLEM. FOR CONFIRMATION WATCH THE NEWS CASTS ON TELEVISION AND READ YOUR NEWS MEDIA. NO WONDER THAT SOME GOVERNING STRUCTURES ARE KEEN TO PASS LAWS TO PREVENT THE MEDIA FROM DISCLOSING CRIMINAL ACTIVITY OR JUST PLAIN DISHONEST, INCOMPETENCE AND INCIVILITY.

PEOPLE ARE ASKING WHETHER THERE ARE ANY TRULY HONEST, CIVIL AND COMPETENT GOVERNMENTS.

THE PERCEPTION OF THE PEOPLE IN OUR WORLD IS THAT THE RICH ARE GETTING RICHER AND THE POOR POORER.

ONE WAY TO IMPROVE THE LOOMING DISASTER THAT IS CURRENTLY OCCUPYING THE MINDS OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE IS WHAT GOVERNMENTS ARE DOING ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING AND THE SCOURGE OF OVER POPULATION OF THE EARTH. TOGETHER THESE TWO FACTORS CAN CREATE AN ARMAGEDDON SITUATION WORLDWIDE. WE MUST ACT RESPONSIBLY AND ACT IMMEDIATELY.

  80. Sidney true patriotic words, people are following people blindly without bearing the consequences in mind. To be horizontal in stead of looking up to the only Powers that can bring about real change, we will degenerate with incredible speed. No politicians can be trusted in this world they are the ones messing it up. Not long from now there will be such a dramatic change and those not living in and by the TRUTH will bite their tongues in agony. We the people are to blame for not making a real difference according to GOD’s commands.
