Wonkie feels that although 2009 sped by incredibly quickly, it was certainly a very intense year. The tone was set with the tragic loss of Helen Suzman at the very beginning of the year. Upon reflection, it seems that just so much has happened since then.
The United States elected their first black president – Barack Obama. The world was overjoyed – well at least half the world was overjoyed that George Bush was no longer in power if nothing else. Obama inherited a US economy in dire straits and he has still much work to do to get his country back on track. Europe and the rest of the world are not in a much better state. While there has been much talk of green shoots, many of the world’s major economies are still in recession.
In South Africa, Jacob Zuma was elected president in April. This was a climax of some rather entertaining campaigning involving the likes of Julius “Nandos” Malema.
Then swine flu went berserk the world over. If you managed to avoid that in South Africa then chances are 50-50 that you did not avoid the rampant crime spree – from ATM bombings to drive-in mall robberies. It was a violent year. The Shaik family fared well overall with Schabir Shaik happily spending his final hour after hour after hour after hour not dying after being released on medical parole earlier this year. His brother Mo Shaik was appointed head of the South African Secret Service.
Then came the tragic death of Michael Jackson – certainly one of the greatest pop stars that ever lived.
It has definitely been an eventful year and sadly not all of it very good. It was fun making cartoons for you all and reading your thoughts and opinions. Wonkie looks forward to a much happier, positively eventful 2010. Enjoy the last hours of 2009 and show in the New Year in style! Remember – don’t drink and drive!
