Is Julius Malema a racist?

Julius Malema was quoted by the Dispatch as saying: “Why is the African leadership not given an opportunity to occupy strategic positions in the economic sector? If you look at the security cluster, it is all Africans. Are we reduced to security?” Julius went on to criticise Jacob Zuma by saying that the appointments fuelled the perception that Africans were not capable of running these economics-related portfolios. Wonkie gets the feeling Julius will not be happy until every aspect of South Africa is driven by some kind of idiotic quota system.

In other news, Lembede Investment Holdings (the financial arm of the ANC Youth League) were recently investigated by Gobodo auditors who found some irregularities. According to the Sunday Times last weekend, some R436 million from 32 suspect deals was found unaccounted for by the auditors. For new Wonkie readers, in case, you didn’t get the reference in the last frame about Julius Malema doing the math – check out the Julius Malema matric results.

Wonkie is curious to know what readers think about Julius Malema’s recent comments:

Malema one sandwich short of a picnic basket? I think he’s also one tjop short of a braaivleis! His continued state of celebrity status can only damage the ANC because the comedy he continues to generate finds its way to chief SA donors everywhere. What I’m forgetting, of course, is that masses of people agree with and support him. As long as that’s the case, one doesn’t need to be a prophet. Semaj

i’m not sure about the general nationale behind Malima’s plight, it may even be irrelevant and even technically unfounded but i dont like the message being passed through this depiction it indeed supports Malima’s notion – all races have in them corrupt, uneducated and incompetent individuals, but i love the cartoon, it makes me laugh as it should do…

  3. PM

Thanks Mark! Wonkie only hopes that Mr Malema starts to look beyond race as a rationale for everything. It appears that if something is wrong currently then it must be a result of a conspiracy by the ‘non-africans’ or something of the sort which is utter rubbish – actually having typed that out it sounds creepily familiar to Mugabe’s attitude about the West (i.e. that they are solely responsible for the mess in Zimbabwe).. Julius’s role model perhaps?

  4. erraheim

thanks malema, i was scare shaik was promise a post as min. of finance.shame on you sane people for thinking no good can come from melema.

  5. lux

what Malema said has some racial connotations but i think one will be wrong and of course very wrong in making conclusion on the basis of one isolated event. If we say that he is racial then virtually we are saying affirmative action is racial because the guy is stressing down an affirmative action cause.

Dear Wonkie, I listened to the radio interview on SAfm & think its very unfair to say that Julius Malema is racist or attacked President Jacob Zuma. Malema was just saying the correct thing that the STRATEGY & TACTICS policy document of the ANC states categorically that “…the National Democratic Revolution intends to liberate Blacks (Africans, Coloureds & Indians) in general & Africans in particular”. Therefore, it is not enough to have political liberation without economic liberation. What he did not say, which I wished him to say was that there are capable young female Africans who are economists out there. LET US NOT DISTORT EVERY

  7. Michael

Malema was right he should have said we should appoint black ladies in our country for those positions he was crying out loud for.

  8. Ady

This was a really good read – I think it’s time South Africans look pass race! Glad I came across your site.

  9. wendy

quite frankly – i think malema can say whatever he wants – and he has a right to – maybe we should start looking at the puppets at the top of scale – afterall they’re the ones who pull the strings -

  10. Ben

malemas recent remarks correspond with his matric results–not so much a racist as just plain stupid.

  11. John

Thank you! You write very interesting articles… definitely improved my mood. :)

  12. phaahla

Cde President Malema,is hundred percent correct, there is a growing perception that Africans are incapable and the composition of these clusters(security & economy) can not be ignored. Is it just a coincidence that on the security cluseter they are all Africans who happens to be Zulus (except their deputies i.e Mbalula) and the other cluster are coming from the minority group(s)? Look, under Mbeki regime there was this debate in the corridors which everybody was shot down when they tried to raise it,Xhosa nostra and Nepotism,i.e Nqakulas,Ncukas,Moleketis,Zumas*,and so on, When we questioned it,we where told that they are cadres in their own right(s). No wonder Blade can come in defence of what we used to accuse Mbeki of, because he is a Zulu.Yes accuse Malema and I as narrow minded and unintellectual, but be careful,Cde Motlanthe could be the next President and more Pedis and Limpopo people will swell the cabinte and you should not question that.

  13. busi

malema is a disgrace to our country and should be locked up in Robben Island alone just for a few months maybe then he will learn to shut his trap and talk sense only when neccessry because the only thing he is promoting is violence and hate speech. CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG.

  14. busi

I do agree that we need ladies in higher posts, but we can’t let any fool to run our country just because we want to make julie julie happy.

  15. Tim

NO,BUT A DOWNRIGHT BUFFOON WHO JUST WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL THEIR SAUER STREET NEIGHBOURS WHEN THEY PUT THE MIKE ON HIS LIPS!HE AND HIS GRANDPA ZUMA DROP WORDS FROM THEIR LIPS LEADING TO MOCKERY OF THEIR STATEMENTS.

  16. caroline

Malima was being elected as person whom the members of the yl and only members of the yl could say he is not the leader they wanted by voting him out, but so far I think he is representing the young lion generation as we agreed in the conference of the yl.

  17. caroline

malima he is represating our genaration, like mokaba, mbalula and others, viva majunju,

  18. caroline

ur repreceting the black, youth as we said we need youth Empowerment in muzatsi

  19. mochabo

Malema is da man,he is trying to liberate us frm da slavery of colonisation but because our minds are captivated by da whites colony, we fail 2 c when our felow Black Brother speaks sense. Viva Malema!

  20. THE WATCHER

yeah right! i’m sure he is decolonised himself hence he’s riving European’s finest – C63 AMG – costing about three quarters plus [of a million], while the youths of this country contribute not just significant margins in unemployment stats but illitrate and unskilled as well, Malima and his crew that acts and thinks like him are in it for the money and comfortable political positions they continue to secure because of this populism stunt they are pulling and they are raking it because of people like you Mochabo who keep voting them in these positions, what happened with the Lembede funds we continue to ask, he was the first one to suggest that this chapter in the ANCYL be closed, why? people who were involved in running of that project continue to enjoy comfortable positions in the pillers of the state, its not about you and others like us out there, its about them – see the light, it will never be as bright as it is now

  21. mochabo

Hallo Good people! I thnk we shud focus on wat is Julius Malema’s role as a yl president Not wat he is driving 4 dat matter! A Merc C63 is no gud 4 him becoz he is a youth president or just becoz he is Black? If he can afford it (lawfully) and he loves it, then why not buying? Wat I love most abt Malema is dat he doesnt buy any1 a smile, even u who thnks he is stupid. And again dat guy’s matric results has nothng 2 do with his position @ ANCYL so stop making it a subject in this matter!

  22. mm

    malema is fokken dom

  23. shrink

Malema is going to be a delema in this country. He is uneducated to be in the position he is in! People can see the rainbow nation is erroding away each day. There is more violence and increasing hate building between races.
The pot at the end of the rainbow is empty.
    Shrink

  24. shrink

Dear CAROLINE If MALEMA ( uncouth blabber mouth who can only spit hate speech.) represents your views and that of the yl, then i feel sorry for the future of this country. It looks like nothing can be done in an “african” way with out violence and distruction!!! Xenophobic attacks on neighbours to point out one example. MALEMA is leading the youth with the wrong attitude. Its been 14 years since the elections and people like you are inspired by an idiot like MALEMA. Grow up
    Shrink

  25. semaj

I think ID leader Patricia de Lil hit the nail on the head recently on TV’s Gareth Cliff Show when she said Malema was saying out loud what the ANC and our president cannot say. To be truthful, that thought occurred to me earlier. It’s very disturbing because it makes a horrible kind of sense.

  26. Stephan Iliffe

i don’t see why everything has to be African…don’t get me wrong I am best friends with black people…but what is so wrong with the rest of us that we can’t do anything…I am one blink away from giving up on South Africa and their terrible choices that are doing nothing but destroying the economy and putting unqualified people in charge

  27. CultjaVultja

Malema is NOT stupid! He is very dangerous because he says the things that many of the frustrated, poor, uneducated and illiterate think. By saying these detestable things, he ensures that he remains on the front pages of the media and in the forefront of our minds.

It is a calculated action taken by the ANC leadership to play to the mob and ensure that while they enrich themselves and their cohorts, they also become so firmly entrenched that accountability is not even an issue.

It is the same thing that the Nats did when they were first voted into power. They consciously fed the prejudices of the lower income, less educated members of society, stirring up hatred and strife and nurturing misunderstanding and fear. They continued to use these tools to rule this country and oppress the majority for decades.

The ANC is exactly the same, except in that they have discarded the “thin veneer of respectability” and openly flaunt their corruption. They will also use whatever means necessary to ensure that they retain a stranglehold on the power and the wealth of our country.

The unfortunate thing is that a large majority of our people will continue to allow themselves to be exploited and manipulated by a handful of “public servants” who do not actually care about our people or our country.

If people like Malema are allowed to continue speaking so irresponsibly the racial divide will continue to widen and the mindset of our people will continue to be shaped until it becomes a natural step to turn on one another and destroy everything we have tried to build.

The only winners will be the handful of people at the top of the food chain and the country will be in ruins. Look at Zimbabwe… despite the destruction of the entire country under ZANU PF’s rule and being voted out of power, they still run the show.

Only in Africa could a political party lose an election and then still negotiate to rule with the party they lost to. Zimbabwe is a test case to see how far the ANC can push the envelope.

Malema is simply one of the tools that the ANC leadership is very cleverly using to broaden their power base and appeal to more voters. It is why they refuse to censure him. He is simply saying what the ANC Leadership has told him to say.

  28. hello poes

Malema is an idiot, and stupid black …….. Thank goodness I am white, because if I reacted like he did then I will be ashamed if i were black. It is only a matter of time and the whites will rule this country again.

  29. Tim

    Dear Sir
This is my advice to all those who are going to throng to South Africa for the 2010 games.
Avoid restaurants as much as possible since you will be served unhealthy foods and you risk having your card details scanned and sent-off to syndicates.
Back-packing is a big no-no since mafia are establishing backpacxkers lodgings then lay on them once they are in their rooms coercing them to take drugs. The tour operators and private taxis are paid to bring easy targets to seedy and unsafe exstablishments,do not leave any valuables in hotel`s safes since there are staff members who are working with syndicates to break into safes.
do not pick-up street kids for sexual purposes because they are instructed to come back with information that will result in you beinmg robbed.Do not fight with cops when you are stopped since this will lead to violence against you even murder.Try and cooperate as much as you can but do not tell them about your rights because this will just provoke them.Avoid strangers at stadiums especially those who invite you to join them even if they look charming and gorgeous and rich!
I do hope the necessary mechanism will be put in place to discipline Mr Davis for his flawed judgement in the case of a South African Citizen who attempted to scupper and thwart means to deport him to South Africa after being found to have been an illegal alien.

There are problems of crime in South Africa afflicting all South Africans and are syndicate related and knows no race since when a syndicate member send-out footsoldiers to brinbg him cellphone he doesn`t say target whites. However these crimes doesn`t give anyone the right to run and go seek asylum abroad since people must show proof that they have exhausted all avenues to get govern, ment to end crime including litigation at the highest court of the land.

Surprise, surprise his parents back in South Africa have no idea that their son became a victim of cri8me including his close acquintances.Huntley did not go to Canada to seek asylum but to find a naive, gullible and vulnerable single woman to twist her arm to naturalise him and that`s exactly what he did!

After he was naturalised he then abuse this woman and she ended the marriage of convenience and its this separation that caused him to make those disparaging and fraudulent utterances against black South Africans and I feel he must be punished for making false allegations under oath because there`s not a shred of evidence that he was a victim of a political crime since you have about five black registered political parties and a whole host f non-governmental ones and he doesn`t say which one of these is conducting political crimes against whites jnor does he give specific times and places where crimes against him happened.I deduce here that this was just a gimmick to save him from being deported back to South Africa and his appeal must be dismissed with the contempt they deserve!

For the shit that he spewed out about me which has now led to me been looked at abroad the way the afrikaners withno brains used to be loked at in the past i will definitely kill him if he sat foot in this country!!!!!!

  35. madenzo

    he is an idiot

  36. KABELO MASAKALA

well…in my honest opinion, i truly admire Julius Malema because…
1- he speaks his mind and doesn’t need a personal assistant to advise him what to say.
2- Julius Malema always speaks what is in his mind.
3- Julius Malema always speaks the truth and never stutters nor repeats himself, he is heard the first time and causes a stir and that is what the youth of South Africa wants, TO BE HEARD AND TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Mark Khoza

i’m sure it is an honest opinion,
just speaking the mind should not be the point Kabelo, as if this is made a basis of the current ‘revolution’ it says then we are in the wrong revolution, that of pupulism. But speaking the mind sensibly on well researched matters on the other hand will not only free the youths on issues that matter (at local level) but will open a room for growth in the most important aspects of leading people.

  38. semaj

If what Malema says and thinks represents the views of SA youth and if what he thinks and says represents SA youth being being taken seriously, God help us all!

  39. tim

he`s not the youths of south africa and the youths of south africa are not him…where`s the equation or correlation there?

he`s the ruling party and for the mafia-like ideology of the ruling party!

  40. maDenzo

what he wants the government to do interms of nationalizing the mines is not
gonna happen,i mean the state privatized SABC, TRANSNET, ESCOM etc and now

  41. tim

uphambene!jaa, you are mad if you oppose it because as far as i`m concerned it was a part of the goals of the struggle to usurp and subjugagtte whites and indians who formed a pact with the boers to downtrod us.

what do you think the shout of black power was all about?it does not make sense to have the power but to still not have the economy and minerals of this country.afrikanerdom must be replaced by something else which is black!

  42. Stephan Iliffe

Malema seems to be in the dark at the moment but I somehow don’t believe this is the last of him

  43. gobacktoschool

Notice how poor all the malema’s supporters English is. Not that I care. If Malema has so much support why hasn’t he made it to parliament yet? Perhaps the ancyl is just a good place to bury your biggest embarrassment :) Its also kind of sad to read their posts.
