Wonkie Blog

Below are some of the latest Wonkie blog posts - these are articles about Wonkie, as opposed to cartoon commentary on current affairs. You can find the latest articles about upcoming web developments, new site features, Wonkie competitions and promotions. Details about Wonkie contest and online competition winners will also be published here. Should Wonkie win the lottery, and the blog is going to be migrated to the Caribbean, this is undoubtedly where you will read about it first!

Wonkie update – February 2009

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

Apologies to our regular readers for the intermittent breaks in the cartoons – these are likely to continue over the next 3 weeks or so as Wonkie upgrades a few of our more popular cartoon characters with some smarter looking ones. We’re also planning on sending out a few Wonkie t-shirts to our top commenters on the site so please do take a moment or two to let your opinion be known on whatever the issue is… we’d love to hear your thoughts!

Coming up over the next couple of weeks is a series of cartoons on BBBEE (affirmative action) – from a variety of different racial perspectives. Look forward to reading your thoughts on the subject since you all had a fat lot to say in emails to us last month!

Thanks again for your support and please forward these cartoons on to anyone you think may enjoy them.

Thank you!

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

Today we happily arrived at a small landmark of the first 1,000 subscribers to Wonkie.com. Just thought I’d write a quick post to thank all the people that have recently signed up to receive the free cartoons by email. Since launching late last year growth has been steady and the stream of comments coming in has been increasing and encouraging.

Please do leave your comment on the cartoon and the issue – the point of the site is to have a laugh and to give you a platform to voice your opinion – even if it is totally contradictory to the post!

We’ve also been receiving a number of requests for cartoons on different themes – from BBBEE and international politics to ermm.. how can I put it – cartoons celebrating racial diversity in the world. Please feel free to leave a comment on this post or indicate in the poll below which of the following themes you’d like to see more cartoons on.

I would like to see more cartoons on... (pick one or more)

Winner of the iPod competition

Wonkie iPod Competition

Wonkie iPod Competition

Wonkie would like to thank all the entrants for the recent Subscribe for Free Cartoons – win an iPod competition. The response was better than expected and it has been most encouraging to receive your comments on the Wonkie site over the past weeks.

And the lucky winner for this contest is…: Subscriber 186Nivadni M from Avon, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The winner was selected randomly selected from a total of 476 confirmed subscribers that were eligible for the draw. In addition to the iPod, the Wonkie team will be dispatching 3 t-shirt consolation prizes next week – winners will be notified by email and announced on the site next week.

We will be running similar competitions every quarter and all email subscribers will be eligible for the draw, not just new subscribers. In the meantime, we look forward to your comments, ideas and suggestions for content on the site. Even if you think a particular cartoon is rotten.. drop a comment and add your view on the subject.. it would be great to hear from you!

Welcome 2009!

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

After a much needed break, Wonkie is back! We would like to wish all our readers a very Happy New Year and the very best for 2009.

You may notice some funky changes to the site which include:

  • A slick archive feature so you can browse older cartoons – by tags and cartoon strip categories (e.g. Viva South Africa, The Whole Truth, Bollywood Nights)
  • Integration of surveys into posts (for the lazy among you who don’t like to comment!)
  • A 5-star cartoon rating system with every cartoon post (for the even lazier among you – we really want your feedback!)
  • Subscribe to comments feature integrated in every post
  • Subscription to individual cartoon strips so readers can subscribe to only the strips they’re interested in
  • A Contact Wonkie page if you’d like to leave us a private message or feedback on the site

The winner of the iPod competition for email subscribers will be announced later this week – stay tuned! We hope you’ll continue to enjoy the cartoons this year and look forward to your thoughts, opinions and commentary – have fun!

Time for a short break!

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

Wonkie is taking off very well from meagre pickings of less than 1,000 visitors in the first month to well over 1,000 unique visitors yesterday alone. On behalf of the team, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has read, laughed at, scoffed at, posted comments on and subscribed to Wonkie cartoons – we plan on keeping you coming back for more in the year to come.

We’ll be on a short break from 20th December until the 2nd January – or perhaps a day or two later if the hangover is really bad. We have some exciting stuff planned for Wonkie next year including:

  • Special cartoon coverage of the South Africa 2009 elections
  • Subscription for individual comic strips (e.g. Bollywood Nights) rather than all of them
  • Additional cartoon strips on various themes (e.g. Office humour, Dating)
  • Surveys on topical issues with results presented in cartoon format (e.g. BBBEE; politics)
  • Star rating system for cartoons

If you have any feedback, ideas as to what you’d like to see, or even if you fancy making cartoons with us for a bit of fun, please drop me an email at pratish (at) wonkie.com. It would be great to hear from you.

Finally, a special thanks to Michael Trapido from Mail & Guardian ThoughtLeader and Gareth Cliff from 5 FM, both of whom were very encouraging and were kind enough to give us media newbies some exposure by publishing some of our cartoons on their websites.

We wish you all well over the festive season – keep safe and please don’t drink and drive!
