Wonkie Blog

Below are some of the latest Wonkie blog posts - these are articles about Wonkie, as opposed to cartoon commentary on current affairs. You can find the latest articles about upcoming web developments, new site features, Wonkie competitions and promotions. Details about Wonkie contest and online competition winners will also be published here. Should Wonkie win the lottery, and the blog is going to be migrated to the Caribbean, this is undoubtedly where you will read about it first!

Wonkie comments and Reader gripes

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

It’s been fun for Wonkie to cover both the US and South African elections over the last few months. Particularly on the coverage of the South African elections, Wonkie received a number of emails stating we’re too pro one party vs another. Please bear in mind that Wonkie is trying to capture the thoughts and sentiments of a very diverse group of South Africans: be they pro-ANC, anti-ANC, pro-DA, anti-Cope, anarchists, pro-AWB or whatever. There are bound to be sentiments you don’t agree with and others that you do agree with.

The whole point is that we’re all relatively free to have our own points of view and this is a forum to share your views and increase the insight and understanding of others by offering your perspectives – so before you write emails to us directly complaining something is too pro-ANC or we are a DA propoganda machine (interesting how we get both emails on the same post sometimes!), please consider leaving your comment and viewpoint publicly on the site so others can benefit and grow their understanding of the issue at hand with your perspective on it. And thanks particularly to those of you who comment regularly – we really appreciate your thoughts and insights and it certainly helps us shape our own thinking at Wonkie if nowhere else.

Now that SA election fever is over, the focus of Wonkie will change slightly to covering more international current affairs material through the The Whole Truth cartoons in addition to the Viva South Africa cartoons. We will be also introducing a number of other strips to keep you all entertained – stay tuned!

We’re also looking at ways to change the frequency of Wonkie emails so your inbox does not get flooded. If you do subscribe to Wonkie, please help us by completing the poll below so we can figure out what works best for you:

Senor Dodgy visits the 24.com South African Blog Awards

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

sa-blog-awards-judges-names
Don’t get us wrong – we think it’s great that Wonkie has been nominated in 2 categories in the 2009 South African Blog Awards. On closer examination though, the selection of blogs for these awards looks quite suspect.

We thought it best we write this article before the results get published so we don’t look like sore losers if we don’t win any awards. Firstly, exhibit 1 to the left is the list of judges for the 2009 South Africa Blog Awards. Hmmm… No disrespect to the judges but can you spot the problem here if these guys have to choose the best of South Africa?

Secondly, Wonkie is really sad that it didn’t get a mention for Best New Blog of 2008. Not so much because it’s doing so well on many objective measures like readership, subscribers, number of comments, page views, etc but more because it appears a few of the nominations that are there don’t even qualify to be in that category – we’re not talking about the content but just the basic fact that they weren’t even started in 2008 as they needed to have been for that category (e.g. geekology appears to have it’s first post on 22 Jan 2009, and mpieters has its first posts in 2007)!!

Thirdly, selecting a blog like classicmalema for best political blog? Sure if it were nominated in the humour category, Wonkie would consider it fair competition but a blog that outrightly declares itself as a satirical blog targeting 1 politician being nominated for top political blog in South Africa – come now, really!

If the organisers, 24.com and other sponsors want to have some credibility with Awards of this type, they should at least check to ensure that their nominations are valid and include a fair representation of the country’s readers when selecting their numerous judges. Hmmm… I wonder if this will qualify for next year’s Most Controversial Posts award! LOL.

Regardless, despite the flaws, Wonkie thinks it’s important to have an event of this sort if only to encourage new bloggers and credit current bloggers for a job well done – so thanks to the organisers for taking the initiative. Wonkie only hopes that the organisers and judges do some due diligence on the blogs of the winners of this year’s awards to ensure they qualify, before publicly announcing winners to prevent the entire event from looking farcical.

In the spirit of South African politicians having their cake and eating it too, please click here to vote for Wonkie! At least we’re telling it like it is! For those of you who already voted – thank you for your support and we really hope we win if only to recognise the hard work that’s been put into Wonkie by the writers, commentators and cartoonists alike.

Pretty please vote for Wonkie!

Thanks again to all our readers – particularly our subscribers – for supporting Wonkie since we started this cartoon blog late last year. We have grown from zero in October last year to over 1,500 daily readers today and it has certainly been as much fun reading your comments and feedback as it has been making cartoons for you. The South African blog awards are currently taking nominations in a number of categories and we would greatly appreciate your thumbs up for Wonkie!

We are back!

April 15th, 2026 (Updated)

Thanks for the numerous emails and being patient over the last couple of weeks – no we were not abducted by aliens or Grace Mugabe. Wonkie decided to go on a short trip to the Caribbean to experience the carnival festivities out there (and of course the customary week on the beach thereafter to recover from the over-indulgence of rum, rum, rum and more rum). Wonkie figured if we were working in the South African Department of Foreign Affairs the visit would probably count as a business trip to diversify cultural horizons and promote South Africa’s 2010 world cup – we rationalised the need for the trip accordingly.

Readers will be pleased to know approximately 60% of Trinidad now intends to visit South Africa for the world cup. Most of whom believe that they will be staying in foreign affairs minister Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma’s house, free of charge.
