Helen Zille has come under fire once again for stating some facts about Jacob Zuma. Wonkie honestly has no problem with Mrs Zille’s objections – that is after all the role of the opposition in government. In most cases her objections, comments and observations are sound. But in terms of pure political strategy, she may was well be writing the book on how to lose friends and alienate people at this point.
It appears Mrs Zille totally ignores the real consequences of what she says and has questionable political aptitude to get things done – particularly, if she expects voicing every objection is going to make a difference. She needs to have a strategy of what she wants to achieve with each objection and voice it at the right time in the right way, and then only if there is a high probability that it will make the desired impact. She can certainly learn from Mr Zuma who in stark contrast keeps his mouth shut, despite all the objections stacked against him, and successfully managed to manouvre himself to his end goal.
While Mrs Zille’s latest firestarter comment is not dishonest – viz. that Mr Zuma put his wives at risk of contracting HIV because he had sex with a known HIV-positive young lady without a condom – the question is what value does it bring to herself politically and for South Africans in general to raise this point in this way now? The answer is NONE: she’s done nothing to promote condom usage by her statement; people that used to like Mr Zuma still like him; people that didn’t like Mr Zuma still won’t like him – and neither of these latter points are consequential to anything in South Africa right now.
Julius Malema and his equally bright colleagues at the ANC Youth League on the other hand still continue to make racist, sexist and blatantly inflammatory, stupid remarks. Earlier this month Julius called Zille a racist little girl which is tame compared to some of the comments made this week by the ANCYL. Surely Mrs Zille can charge them with crimen injuria at the very least after their recent scathing personal comments against her and her team.
In international news and perhaps more importantly, Julius Malema and ANCYL’s idiotic comments are raising some critical issues on the validity of Darwin’s theory. Geneticists all over the world are closely monitoring the situation and are hoping dangerous elements in the ANC Youth League gene pool wipe themselves out before a set of rogue, violent DNA proteins contaminate the general South African public.
