Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize cartoon

Wonkie is for the most part a fan of Barack Obama but awarding the Nobel Peace prize to him is a joke. Particularly since the February 1st nomination deadline for the award saw Obama in office for less than 2 weeks. Vision and political promises are a far stretch from execution. Certainly in South Africa we’ve seen the value of election promises and how they turn out in reality. And yes, while the world is relieved to see George Bush depart from the White House, the sense of hope to the world that Obama’s arrival brings is largely the sense of hope that he can’t possibly be as big an idiot as his predecessor. If that is sufficient grounds for a Nobel Peace prize award, then Wonkie would like to nominate SpongeBob Squarepants for next year’s prize.

The Nobel peace prize has typically been awarded to people who have already achieved something of substance – Martin Luther King Jr; Mother Theresa; Desmond Tutu; Dalai Lama; FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. While Mr Obama certainly shows promise to deliver greatness, the fact remains that he has still not achieved anything substantial as yet – from this angle, it looks as though the Nobel Committee has simply been caught up in the worldwide Obamamania.

  1. Nicky Henry Letswalo says

No , he doesn’t deserve a nobel pease price yet because what he promised is not yet archieved.

  2. Although he was only in office for two weeks at the time of the nominations- his whole campaign inspired a whole new generation of voters to be become active in the political life of their country. This surely contributed to much more activity on the part of South African youth during the election period. The increase interest in political space of the young and not so young globally surely increase the democratic space and and encourage a whole generation of people to let their voices be heard in that space. More important however is that president Obama has inspired black people and especially black children around the world to reach for the stars and to realize that they can realize their dreams. This in itself is a contribution that many few great men/ women have made to date.

  3. I don’t think he deserved it.What if he messes up?

  4. Obama does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize – not yet – at least.

He has made alot of promises , but that is no ground to award someone the Nobel Peace Prize – we need to see action from his words , then consider him for the prize.

He also needs to focus more on Africa – and implement foreign policy on aididng the continent.

  5. He derseves the prize, the man is doing everything he can to provide peace in the world to help the jobless, poor, Americans. He campained very well and the message was head by the world, they believed in him thats why today he is the first black man to lead the USA

  6. This guy manage to defy the odds and tell His story to the world and made people beleive in themselves. In that He inspired manorities that there is hope for them too in a democratic country. I think when South Africa gets an indian president He/She should be awarded the Nobel. Pity I did not get to hear the motivation behind His nomination, Him being the President is an Acheivement that qualifies Him to be a Nobel Lourete!!

  7. The day you, Mugabe, receive a peace price, heaven and hell will freeze over. The millions that you’ve murdered, will also haunt you, you…..you….swine. It’s good for Zimbabwe to have such a strong opposition as Morgan.

  8. When a man hires 3 Law firms of Lawyers instead of 1 Lawyer to protect him from displaying his Birth certificate to Americans who need to see it, because they do not believe that he was Born in America. Then what does this tell you. Similar to Zuma who fought to stop Papers from coming from a particular island rather than have them displayed in court, What does this tell you? If Obama was really an American citizen, what would be easier that to simply let the American people see his birth certificate rather than pay 3 Law firms more than $3 million to stop the display of his birth certificate. Likewise
Zumu also hiring Lawers to keep those papers out of South Africa.
C’Mon Americans, C’mon South Africans we’re all a bunch of Ostriches with our heads stuck in the sand. Little wonder politicians all round the world are doing what they like and laughing as they fill their Bank Accounts.

  9. They should award it to Zuma and Malema look what they have promised we must have at least 50 million tax payers to achieve half of what they have promised as for Obama we will have to wait and see, I think he was awarded to early

  10. It costed real courage to bomb the moon and not another weaker nation. Yes the whole of the Usa deserves the Noble peace prize

  11. Obama who?

  12. My word are we not suffering from some illuisions of grandeur . What does Obama and Malema have in common pleeese. WE can and never should compare apples with pears.

  13. As far as the Peace prize goes, what has Obama done other than say what he would like to do? There has not been one single promise from Obama that has been filled. His ratings have dropped dramatically in an American Poll and it appears that he has the Gay Community which is only 2 % of the American population also saying how marvelous he is and yet he again has given them nothing but promises.
Sadly he was also the first American prsesident to not attend the National day of prayer. PASOP! America, God keeps short fuses when He is pushed aside.

  14. Talk is cheap. Money buys the whisky! What has he achieved up to now? Give the guy time and then we’ll see.

  15. NO WHY HE SHOULD GET IT,HE DOESNOT DESSEVER IT JUST BECAUSE HE IS BLACK DOESN”T MEAN HE GET AUTOMATICALLY ENTRY

  16. Paid for by bail out money!

  17. This letter was apparently checked at “Snopes” and said to be TRUE

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA
By Lou Pritchett one of corporate America ‘s true living legends- an acclaimed author, dynamic teacher and one of the world’s highest rated speakers.

    Dear President Obama:
You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.
You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don’t understand it at its core.
You scare me because you lack humility and ‘class’, always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the ‘blame America ‘ crowd and deliver this message abroad.
You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer ‘wind mills’ to responsibly
capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use ‘extortion’ tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O’Relllys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will
probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.
    Lou Pritchett

  18. The prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving.

    Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ‘ulterior motive’ … She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize …. She was not selected.
Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
Powerful message, especially the “cartoon.” Let us never forget!

    63 years later

In MEMORIAM – 63 YEARS LATER

  19. I’ve got it now. Those blokes who choose the Noble Peace Prize winner have hatched a cunning plot. By giving him the peace prize they hope that because he is a peace prize winner in the future he will not be able to bomb and try to obliterate people who do not agree with the USA and its policies. I reckon next year’s one should go Osama Bin Ladan: Q.E.D. – peace at last!

  20. Yes I Agree .. He Deserves The Noble Peace Prize .. 🙂

I Bet .. If He (Barack Obama) Was Running S.Africa , The country would Be on its way to Prosperity, the Nation South Africa was ment to be..

But Instead We Have A Zuma ..

A perfect Example of Corrution at its Best..
Showing the World how to decay a country to nothing.

  21. Yes Obama deserve to win Nobel Peace Prize.

  22. no i believe Tshingarai deserved that price because since he came to office we have seen changes in Zim (e.g. availability of basic food in stores) and we all no why is it so slow to see more changes there

  23. I have over the years read the humiliation of an afriacan president and always i beg to ask What did MUgabe do?TAke the land they say ,and whos land is it?What about the people who murder children and women in the middle east do we see thembeing cartooned? On a scale of 1 to 10 Mugabe and Geroge Bush Obama who is the most ruthless killer? The Jews random bombing of the palestinians or The American s bombing civilians in Kandahar or Afrganistan. No mUgabe is the worst why? He instigated his own people to get what is theirs.Tswangirai have also killed Zimbaweans when he advocated for sanctions that caused chaos in Zim he deserved a medal For what democracy? No he did not murder enough Obama did and should keep up the good work especially with the issue of Iran more sanctions more death more bloodshed .If i look at it mUgabe is a midget murderer that the rest that is if he ever did.

  24. i thank is too early to award him cos has nothing done so far but only endless promises, why not given tokoyo sexwale

  25. Obama Deserves it! Its typical of the media to make noise whenever a black person achieves something, to make noise. Here in South Africa Blacks are perceived as people who deserve to be whites’ garden boys, criminals, etc. It happened with Ex minister of health, Tito Mboweni, etc but now that white people are in those positions, no noise is made. If the committee felt that Obama met all the requiremnts, yes he deserves it. Its high time that the world realizes that the colour of the skin doesn’t determine a person’s intelligence.

  26. I’m sick of the people who always make noise whenever a black person has achieved something great! There are still people who perceived us (black people) as only good for working in the shops as cashiers, gardeners, security guards, etc. If the Nobel Peace Price’s committee felt that Obama deserved the title why do some people, who do not even know the criteria make this noise? What about his campaign that was so peaceful? You look at the cartoons whether on newspapers and here on Wonkie, mostly black people are used as if they are very bad people. We should be seeing a lot of Aggliot’s cartoons these days, but the media only attacks black people. Congratulations Obama! You deserve the crown. Wear it with pride.

  27. Something very weird about Obama. Why can’t we see a copy of his birth cerificate? After reading the ‘Left Behind” series by Tim Lahaye I am inclined to agree that he could be the anti christ.

  28. What a theory – should everything the black man achieve be connected to the evil – Surely you cant be serious in referring to this fine man as the antichrist.

  29. who the heck is TOKOYO – sounds like someone from China surely you do not want the neo imperialist that place trade above human dignity to walk away with this Nobel pease or is it peace price

  30. Simo Mqadi, well said, I fully agree with you. One pundit was even questioning the one of the adjudicators intelligence. Do people have to go to that extent to show their dislike of this black man, they couldnt defeat Him in the elections now they redicule Him in such forums!! how disgusting….
Obama, He is the President of the most powerful nation in the world, He is intelligent, has charisma, He is tall, handsome and He is unashamedly Black in a white world(thats his crime), and He is now a Nobel Laurete….

  31. Simo Mqadi, well said, I fully agree with you. One pundit was even questioning one of the adjudicators intelligence. Do people have to go to that extent to show their dislike of this black man. They couldnt defeat Him in the elections now they redicule Him in such forums!! how disgusting….
Obama, He is the President of the most powerful nation in the world, He is intelligent, has charisma, He is tall, handsome and He is unashamedly Black in a white world(thats his crime), and He is now He has Nobel Peace Prize …and He aint givin it back.

  32. Obama is a man of many firsts…first he was the first black american president and with only 12 days in the seat, was nominated to win the nobel prize for peace…the world’s first to win the Nobel prize on making promises!

All those before him had to do more than just making promises! Clearly the Nobel commity are just part of the majority who believe that if you show typical “englishspeaker goodwill” and praise a black man, he will automatically gain some intelect and then suddenly work himself to death! What a dream world they live in!

1 Thessalonians 5:3For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

Never before did this world “say peace” with a stronger voice! Poor fools, this is going to be the first time ever a nobel prize was given to somebody who never pruduced!

  33. Phumlani,

You miss the point completely..it’s not because of a dislike in blacks that the intelect of that fool was questioned, but because of the fact that obama never did anytghing but making promises..us here in africa, and maybe that guy who questioned that fool’s intelct no better than to believe the promises of a black man! You should understand that better than anybody else!

  34. Reddy,

I agree with what you said about obama getting the nobel prize…but I would like you to shake this beggar attitude of africa off! It’s time africa learn to look after themselves – amaricans worked hard to have what they have – africa should just do the same and stop begging!

  35. Tanni,

Obama just work for the beast….your church is the anti-Christ…almost all churches and relegions are the anti-Christ…

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

Your I.F.C.C. pastor can’t and won’t tell you the truth about the anti-Christ!

Get another Teacher…the One and Only True Teacher…

Math. 23:2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  36. mick Conquest says

What will we give him if actually does something????

  37. lipstick,

Nobody else but the black man is to be blamed for the fact that everybody who ever met a black man thinks black points to evil! Maybe blacks should considder behaving better!

  38. mick Conquest ,

Most of the time when a black man actually does something, he should get a hiding afterwards!

  39. Man,

YES~! Why not rather Tokoyo Sexwale! At least he did something in the past…Obama only smiled and talked too much…nobody gets my attention by smiling all the time!

  40. Laban,

You sound like a muslim to me! You miss the point..the palestines fired bombs on Israel first.
And that idiot Sadam Hosein did not want to allow the inspetors, acording to aggreement, into his country to satify themselves that there were no weapons of mass destruction…If that saddam fool allowed them in, he would still be alive today! Get annother Prophet..you’ll find him in the Buble – that mohammed never was and never will be one…he was married to a catholic, did you know that? More, did you know that the quoran only came into existance some 200 years after mohammed?

  41. Factuality,

Like most other so called “leaders” he surely is a free mason!
Can anybody tell my about a leader who became a leader because of his wisdom? All “leaders” i know about, promoted themselves, convinced the the brainless masses that they are leaders…and the best conman eventually becomes just that!

That goes for obama, zuma as well as mugabe and the whole damm rest of the world’s leaders!

Thank God, I don’t need a leader – I do my own thinking!

  42. I have copied and pasted the nomination process that takes place when choosing an Nobel Peacr Prize lauret on Wikipedia

    “Nomination
    Each year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee specifically invites qualified people to submit nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.[5] The statutes of the Nobel Foundation specify categories of individuals who are eligible to make nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. These are;
Members of national assemblies and governments and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,
Members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Court of Justice at the Hague,
Members of Institut de Droit International,
University professors of history, political science, philosophy, law and theology, university presidents and directors of peace research international affairs institutes,
Former recipients, including board members of organisations that have previously won the prize,
Present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and
Former permanent advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Institute”

  43. @Dirk Muller – We generally allow a fair bit of latitude on the Wonkie site for people from a variety of backgrounds to express themselves. If you’re going to make purely racist comments you will be kicked off the site and all your comments deleted. Please keep your comments constructive and to the subject thanks.

  44. Tony Nkamba says

What has he done to deserve such a prize.Has he resolved the Iraq issue? What about the Afghan war? Hey don’t forget, Guantanamo is still open.He hasn’t made any reforms since the Bush administration. If winning a presidential election is worth a Nobel Prize then these prizes should be distributed to all presidents.

  45. beeing voted in to office as the first back president of the USA is enough to earn Obama a nobel price

  46. Tony Nkamba says

It is very true that its too early to give him such a prize.what if he fails to change anything in America.Being president of one of those countries in the North does not mean that you suitable for a prize.
Obama could be black or whatever but the truth is that you have to work before you earn.An election campaign is obviously inadequate.i thought that this problem of blindly following someone was a Zimbabwean one.
In Zimbabwe , you have one group following Robert Mugabe and you have another one following Tsvangirai yet the two are enemies of democracy.
Whyever they are doing so, God knows.

  47. A big no!

  48. sam etherly says

You have to be kidding, since when should the award be given for championship LYING and a lifetime of corruption?

  49. Simo Mqadi and Phumlani, why bring in the race card again? Surely people are allowed to debate the merits or demerits of a “black” leader without being accused of racism. Lord I am so tired of it! Lets move on! When commenting on Obama, I, and I’m sure most others, never ever considered his skin colour. All that concerns me is the fact that he is an American President with almost limitless power, which in the past has not been well used by WHITE (if that makes you happy) Presidents!

  50. I think if you have to answer the question does Obama deserve to win the prize then you’d have to analyse the whole Nobel prize selection process…I see Phumlani already pasted some of it from Wiki…and if you look at it these are the people who select the winner as published on the Nobel site http://nobelprize.org/

    “Qualified Nominators
The right to submit proposals for the Nobel Peace Prize shall, by statute, be enjoyed by:
    1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
    2. Members of international courts;
    3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history,
philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research
    institutes and foreign policy institutes;
    4. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
    5. Board members of organizations who have been awarded the
    Nobel Peace Prize;
    6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee;
(proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later
than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1) and
    7. Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.”
All people…HUMAN BEINGS… very capable of acting simply on emotions…so I think Wonkie is right to say that they got swept up in Obamamania especially since the nominations would have had to be in by 1 Feb 09.

The rest of the process being as published on the site as follows…it should also be noted that the Nobel Committee doesn’t really care for public opinion on why they chose who they did anyway though, just refer to the last clause on restricted disclosure about nominations etc for 50 yrs! :

“Below is a brief description of the process involved in selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.

September – Invitation letters are sent out. The Nobel Committee sends out invitation letters to individuals qualified to nominate – members of national assemblies, governments, and international courts of law; university chancellors, professors of social science, history, philosophy, law and theology; leaders of peace research institutes and institutes of foreign affairs; previous Nobel Peace Prize Laureates; board members of organizations that have received the Nobel Peace Prize; present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; and former advisers of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

February – Deadline for submission. The Committee bases its assessment on nominations that must be postmarked no later than 1 February each year. Nominations postmarked and received after this date are included in the following year’s discussions. In recent years, the Committee has received close to 200 different nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The number of nominating letters is much higher, as many are for the same candidates.

February-March – Short list. The Committee assesses the candidates’ work and prepares a short list.

March-August – Adviser review. The short list is reviewed by permanent advisers and advisers specially recruited for their knowledge of specific candidates. The advisers do not directly evaluate nominations nor give explicit recommendations.

October – Nobel Laureates are chosen. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced.

December – Nobel Laureates receive their prize. The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony takes place on 10 December in Oslo, Norway, where the Nobel Laureates receive their Nobel Prize, which consists of a Nobel Medal and Diploma, and a document confirming the prize amount.
    Are the nominations made public?

The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.”

So to me on the whole the Nobel prize clan is already a kinda “boy’s club”, elitist group who can do as they please and not even show what they did until 50 yrs down the line when most of the old boys are already dead and gone who did the deeds anyway!

If only all of us could be so lucky as the Nobel committee when it comes to getting off the hook and not having to be accountable for our deeds or worrying about if we were not transparent enough in our selections of things and decision making at times…

But then the whole prize was founded by a man who worked with explosives and their sales for much of his life and then in his will left the amassed wealth to award things for well ‘Noble…Nobel deeds!” Some speculate that a kinda girlfriend, who left him to marry someone else but corresponded with him till his death, was the one who encouraged him to establish the Peace Prize! I think she also won the prize subsequently! 🙂

Now the thing is though if one looks at the selection process again…yep Obamamania would have had to sweep him to the short list but the final decision is only made in Oct and by “the Committee” I was wondering who they were and according to this Huffington Post article they are:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jackson-williams/alfred-nobels-last-will-a_b_316055.html
“The committee of five that names the winner each year reflects the various political factions composing the Norwegian Parliament. Currently, one of the five is from the Conservative Party; another from the far-right Progress Party. Thorbjorn Jagland, Chairman of the Nobel Committee, noted Friday that the choice of Obama was unanimous.”

According to said article this is the excerpt from Nobel’s will which would have had to be guided the Committee:
“to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

I guess so if I was a person on the committee I’d have to say well I don’t think he has abolished or reduced any standing armies in fact he has so far chosen not to do so! BUT if I had to say has he done the most or best work for fraternity between nations and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

Well YEA! And really now if I refelect more on it even Obamamania is that too! Cause the fact that it could even have Obamamania is already a peace congress that happened in the world! Even before his election as the president…look at that speech he gave in Victory sq in Berlin! It was what first brought him into my radar! And well imagine if I was a European…the committee remember is European…But then even not…as a Latin America and Caribbean resident…US poor Caribbeans we have to get lumped with the Latino Lunacy of the likes of Chavez and Noreiga…and WOW! For how Obama handled that at the summit of the Americas here in Trinidad!

I mean one man single handedly changed America from El Diablo to Mi Amigo- her is this book my friend!

Seriously when you listen to his words he really does come over as someone who wants to hold and promote peace congresses…or perhaps will…and probably in a really productive manner…but yep to my knowledge he has clearly not done so yet…but such potential… such a spirit such and idealology…

So yep if I was on the Committee I would have given my vote although I know I know I’d be kinda caught up in Obamamania and I know… I know people are going to accuse me of being kinda sycophantish as some call it! 🙂 But hey it’s my business Im on the Committee and I don’t need to answer to anyone and no details published till 50 yrs! Hmm…I’d probably be dead by then so…Let me tick away or say Aye! for OBAMA! 🙂

Im obvioulsy not on the committe though! 🙂 So then as someone just watching the news really…all I can do is ask myself really not if I think he deserved it but if I’m glad he got it?

And YEP I am! I think because it represents the ideology of peace etc etc…sadly none is evident here on Wonkie with raving lunatics posting on about fellow beings as if they weren’t! And I’ve checked and certain such members seem to repeatedly do it too! Hmm…I think for this the secret weapon should be invoked! 🙂

CHUCK NORRIS IT IS! 🙂 Seriously Wonkie I kinda miss Chuck… I know he must be getting on in age himself and doubt he will live to hear the Nobel Committee’s full disclosure of candidates but for now he should be evoked nunchuks and all …or wait is that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!? 🙂 I know he has some reluctance as Obama is not Texan and he was Walker Texas Ranger but he should get over it already unlike some of the Wonkie commentators should!

  51. Marchelle Fester says

Have to agree. As much as I admire the man and what he hopes to achieve-this went to far in exalting him and putting him on a pedestal. History will either prove them right or wrong but they (the committe) have managed to put a big knock in the Nobel brand and it will lead to us question marking future recepients of this esteemed prize.

  52. NO,thanks for me obama doesn’t diserve the prize ,so far he haven’t done any-thing amazing with only 9 months period come guys ………..

  53. One wonders what really constitute a nobel prize winner, secondly; what criterion they used to select the nobel prize winner. clearly obamma hasn’t anything as yet, but already he is winning a nobel. seriously this needs to be contested.

It is extremely disappointing to see that the award has been gievn to Obama for two reasons.

    1) while his campaign was full of promise he is yet to be given enough time to deliver (at the time of nomination the 2 weeks of his presidential term that he had served was not enough time)

    2) One of the guiding principle that inform Nobel Laureate selection is the desire to bring international attention to an otherwise remote conflict where a champion for peace’s selcetion as a recipient will create interest in the conflict. Now alongside candidates like Aung San Suu Kyi and Morgan Tsvangirai who still today struggle to find peace in their homelands the selection of Obama is simply ludicrous.

I can even hear hiis detractors saying: “look how they honour him even when he has done little to deserve it”.

If this is how the awards are to be issued in the future then the meaning they once carried (for me at least) will be lost
In fact i think this award may be detrimental to Mr. Obama by serving to confirm accusations during his presidential campaign that he was more gimmick and hot air than a legitmate instrument for change.

  55. Stephen Sehlwane says

No hedoesn’t deserve it, he hasn’t done anything to deserve Nobel Peace

  56. Dirk MULLER

I’m not muslim and for your own info iraq was invaded under the pretext of it habouring WMD’s which were not found. The palestinians are fighting againist invasion of their territories i urge you to research on the issue and have more knowlegde before engaging in a debate.

  57. well,i was awed too by the fact that he won…i also had one question and a cartooned picture of him on my blog..i asked one question..HOW DID HE WIN…

  58. Geboy Thoppan says

    No. Not at all.

  59. Obama is an astute politician with slogans like “Yes, we can” and “Change we can believe in”. Exactly what does that mean? He is not a peacemaker and cannot be likened to Mother Theresa. Politicians should never get the award as, usually, they are the instigators of the conflict in the first place.

  60. bakenshark says

People need to get over the fact that Obama is a “half” black man ( the white folk have equal claim to him!! shock horror!) and recognise that he is an “american “first and a “politician” running a close second!
No matter how much you like Obama and his foreign policy, it is patently ridiculous that a man who’s served less than nine months as President should earn a prize that eluded even Mahatma Gandhi. This prize should be for real-world results, not intentions. At least the $1.4 million in prize money is promised to charity. Maybe they’ll use it to create a fund to support people who convert rhetoric into reality.
It’s not Obama’s fault that he attracts such absurd knee-jerk adulation and he must be given credit for fielding the curve ball and accepting the prize with humility and grace, on behalf of the many unheralded heroes who struggle in silence against violence and repression…hopefully the accolade will serve to inspire him to think outside of the “USA” box!

  61. if you trying 2 say you did not even tis time acknowledge what is,then pissoff!

  62. here i’m trying 2 make myself clear.if you still in degrading our one and only obama i mean you might exactly living in hell.obama deserve that award twice as no one else.apparently he should have been awarded with an a life-achievement award at the same time.

  63. You know I didnt know who or what ‘the’ Tsvangirai’ were (cause I thought it could be an object not a person when I just heard the word…I dont know much about Africa or African affairs so forgive me) …from the cartoon I could have thought it was a group or a tribe or something…OK so I’m very ignorant about African affairs…but when all the news was about on Obama’s Peace Prize win there was mention that the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe had been one of the keen contenders for the award…

Wonkie I notice likes to feature Mugabe a lot in cartoons so 🙂 …but he is the President? I think I had mixed up the two…only now realise there is actually a Prime Minister in Zimbabwe and his name is Morgan Tsvangirai!

So anyway apparently it is speculated that he was shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize…apparently a close shave to Obama…the whole thing has to be speculation because as I mentioned yesterday if you read the selection process for the Nobel prize really the details of who were the other nominees etc is left sealed for 50 yrs? Of course people must talk…say things…so…

But just an interesting note for me as I went on to find out a bit more about who exactly is this Tsvangirai and even found this article about him winning a lifetime achievement award in Spain…here is the link….
    http://www.zimtelegraph.com/?p=3577

Just figure if Wonkie readers aren’t already aware of that it would be interesting news to them too I figure…

    Bakenshark,

I think people hold too much regard for the Nobel prize ever since not just for this particular instance of Obama winning…the Nobel Committee is a very European thing…it is not a global committee (at least to my limited knowledge)…although the process has been growing and evolving over the yrs so maybe it will get their sooner than later…from what I’ve been reading at least in the case of the Peace Prize it seems Norwegian politicians decide?…and I have assumed that http://nobelprize.org is their official site.

I assume you are Trini so I figure you should understand that they -the Nobel Committee is only less European than ANR Robinson himself…who pontificates on Moral and Spiritual values… ! 🙂

There is always a lot of speculation as to why this supposedly grand prize was never awarded to Mahatma Gandhi but…I don’t think it is fair to say it eluded him but more he eluded it!

I mean I can understand naming a peace prize after Mahatma Gandhi or something but to have awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to him while living or dead would have been funnier than any Wonkie cartoon I mean…to me it looks like if Alfred Nobel in an attempt to get rid of a lifetime of bad karma (actions) decided to leave these awards behind to perhaps make his after life or other lifetimes better…I never really thought about it before or the process but after reading about it more yesterday…really in a sense taking Alfred Nobel’s money may not be such an accolade after all? Although it is a lot of money and I can’t say if I was ever in such a place of ‘honour’ what I’d do or judge others who have accepted.

But like isn’t it taking on negative karma on your back? Perhaps then yep if they had given it to a Mahatma…a great soul…it may have absolved Alfred’s sin for about 10 lifetimes who knows! And I guess you would have to put the money to very noble use to get that karma accumulated now by you, off your back (if you won)! So you’re right good thing…Obama’s money is off to charity…hopefully deserving groups!

I see the Nobel Committee later on awarded to the Dalai Lama in a kinda way hoping maybe…but the Dalai Lama is more a pop culture icon although it seems from the joy he exudes alone also a point of light…so he stepped up and accepted (I assume as I see him listed as a past winner)…do you think if called to accept Mahatma Gandhi even would have? Somehow I cant see it happening…

Many other Gandhian like points of light (or perhaps disciples?) went on to win and accept like Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King etc etc…some say even Obama draws on his philosophies or is inspired by him as such…all of this is debateable no doubt…

However, in my little mind and refelction…the vision I get is of him eluding the Nobel prize and it’s lovely committee not the other way around…

If this is indeed the nobel prize’s official site here is what they say about Mahatma Gandhi, the Missing Laureate…there statement does make them a bit more noble in my eyes though…as I think they indeed admit to their own shortcomings…

    Poor Little Ole Europeans…

  64. You know Wonkie needs to get an edit fnc for commentators like me who write more than the post itself and who have many grammer errors to clean up long after hitting the submit button! 🙂

  65. OMG! I can’t even spell the word!

  66. no, he must prove it by hard work first. He must help the poor first.

  67. I think the decision made by the nobel peace prize committe was not right how can you nominate someone who has not achieved anything? or is that we dont know the criteria but from what ive seen in the previous years i think they just elected obama because of the fact that he is the first black president in america thats it. You need to work for that nobel prize look at the likes of desmond, madiba, de clerk and the others they all worked hard before being honour with the nobel peace prize. nobel peace prize committe next time you should let us vote for the nominees coz thats not it.

  68. not so soon my people. we need to see some performances first. i understand that the world has got hope but lets wait and see

  69. what a waste, and to those who keep on saying the man is black i think they should think again that guy is neither black nor white but an in between. and yes he does not desrve the prize for he has not yet achieved any thing worthwhile (the people who awarded him should seek medical help/they were bribed to award him) all in all this is all a sick joke.

  70. Powerful words from Presdent Obama shakes the nobel peace committee as a results they thought the award will push hi to fullfill his promises, my view is that they dhould wait until he act on his word!

  71. A Big NO! This is a serious joke, Mr Obamma has achieved nothing. How can on earth a person recieve a rewad for just a plan? Because i believe that we haven’t saw Mr Obamma’s achievements yet, yes his service delivery plan is very good and is going according to his plans up to so far but it’s too early for the Nobel prize.

  72. Funniest thing last night I was reading Kahlil Gibran for my own enjoyment and came up across this quote that I in general liked or reflected something I was contemplating at the time…So I put it up as my Facebook status…but it did occur to me its relevance to perhaps a frame of mind or line of thinking which the Nobel committee could have taken in giving the award…

Later on someone shared that same view (on my Facebook status) that perhaps it was what the Nobel Committee was thinking???

Wonkie readers dont strike me as much for poetry thus far but here it is all the same! 🙂 –

To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to do.
    Kahlil Gibran

Couldn’t logically be featured in any of the guidelines that a committee which was required to be free, fair, transparent and all of that…would have to follow…but lovely sounding all the same! Of course how in reality do we know what a man’s aspirations are?

Let alone assess them against another man’s ones…is why the only proper way must be to have selection and assessment criteria that are publicly known and sent out before in advance…then publish the whole selection thing after…I find a points system works well…it still doesn’t mean a scorer can’t be baised once it is not something that can be scientifically measured(and even then there are always the challenges of measurement errors, repeatability etc etc)…

But for the peace prize it would be like how it is for diving, gymnastics and dance competitions!…the average aggregate score…but still people would complain…but let’s put it out of 10! 🙂

    Hmm… Obama’s aspirations, hopes and dreams— 9.9997
    While… Zimbabwe’s PM— 9.9881

    Honour Roll of Past Winners!

    Martin Luther King Jr….I have a dream… 9.9999
    Mother Theresa… a perfect 10!
    Mahatma Gandhi…Hmm…Ahmmm…. unscoreable! (#Err!)

And then they should invite all the people still alive or their descendants to sing (the new sugar free version of) the Coke commercial again…

“I’d like to buy the world a home
    And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
    And snow white turtle doves

    (Chorus)
I’d like to teach the world to sing
    In perfect harmony
I’d like to buy the world a Coke
    And keep it company
    That’s the real thing”

  73. YOU KNOW WHAT? THE GUY DESERVE IT BUT IT WAS STILL TOO SOON TO AWARD HIM COZ HE ONLY MADE PROMISES,THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST WAITED AND OBSERVE IF A SINGLE PROMISE BECOMES TRUE

  74. Depending on the time frame of the nominations from the (NPP) organizing committee he deserves to be nominated, but winning it at such short notice is another thing which i (PERSONALLY DISAGREE) with given the fact that he has not delivered on some of the promises he made.So all i’m saying it depends on the criteria of selection and grounds for winning.

  75. 2 be honest i think obama deserve to win that nobel prize. i qoute”To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honoured by this prize – men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

“But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build – a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honour specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action — a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.

  76. Malasarose says

he doesn’t deserve it. maybe if their mission is to make him think that he has already archieved everything, so he can relax and not deliver then that is a good move. PEOPLE THE MAN HASN’T DONE ANYTHING YET.

  77. mr mugabe is out of order, and he was not gonna win the peace noble price bcoz he was nominating him self………..

  78. as for mugabe pliz forgive his doings wen u grow old ur brains grow young

  79. NO HE doesn”t deserve it because He made so many promises when He took over power. He promise aid to Africa which is not fullfilled yet.
