Following on from the mountain of Jacob Zuma promises on his roadtrip last year, South African ministers and ANC leaders are taking turns making bold statements about how they’re going to crack down on this, that and the other – small print – if they get elected again, of course. South Africa is currently ranked one of the world’s most violent countries outside of nations at war. Many members of the parliament still don’t realise that it’s not like the Olympics where they’ll win a gold medal for this status.

For non-South Africans, Nathi Mthethwa is South Africa’s current Safety and Security minister and Gwede Mantashe is the ruling ANC party secretary-general.
