South African Brandon Huntley was recently granted refugee status in Canada. According to the Ottawa Sun, Mr Huntley had provided “clear and convincing proof of the South African government’s inability or unwillingness to protect him”. The ruling had the South African government up in arms, particularly as it pegged them as being impotent in protecting “white South Africans from persecution by African South Africans” – in the words of William Davis, the tribunal panel chair.
Many South African commentators, reporters and bloggers are ridiculing the Canadian process for granting refugee status – basically suggesting that the Canadians did not even perform the minimum required research before drawing their conclusion. This research, according to them, would have led them to the fact that the South African Constitution makes it illegal to practise this type of racism.
Still, the reality of the matter remains that white Mr Huntley was attacked several times by blacks who also called him bad names with a racial slant. While Wonkie certainly sees the humour in this entire episode, it certainly also feels the frustration felt by many South African citizens about the state of crime in South Africa. With cash in transit heists, ATM bombings, and regular mall robberies in addition to the uncalled-for violence that often accompanies break-ins, South African citizens of all races still wait for their government to lift their persecution from criminals.
